NCAA Football Betting Rules

Football betting, especially pro football betting, is one of the most popular choices of our players. NCAA Football begins in September and is played throughout the season until the December for Bowl games and the BCS (Bowl Championship Series) the concludes in January.

The main action on American football games is in pointspread, or line, betting, where the sportsbook decides on a margin of victory for the favorite that will make either team an attractive betting proposition. Consider the example below:

Notre Dame Fighting Irish
+3
-110
USC Trojans
-3
-110

In the example, the spread is set at three points. The +3.0 after the Notre Dame Fighting Irish means that Notre Dame is the underdog in this game; Notre Dame must either win, or not lose by more than three points, for a bet on Notre Dame to win.

The –3.0 after the USC Trojans means that USC is the favorite; USC must win by more than three points for a bet on USC to win.

If the USC Trojans win by exactly three points, then the bet is said to have fallen on the spread and is deemed a push. All bets are voided and the stakes returned in this instance.

The second number, -110, after each team is the price of a winning bet. A winning bettor will win $100 for every $110 bet.

For a football game to have action, the game must be played for at least 55 minutes actual play. Overtime counts if played, and there are a selection of related betting markets to add extra value, choice and excitement, such as totals, moneyline, winning margin betting, and the like.

NFL & NCAA Football Betting & Rules

BetOnline.com will always be one of the first to offer lines for betting on the NFL, College, CFL, Arena Football, as well as all the pre-season games. In both, the NCAA and NFL, we offer 1st half and 2nd half bets. In the NFL, lines will be offered on every single quarter. All lines for the following week are posted at the end of the current week’s games. Along with the regular game lines, you can also bet on futures and in excess of 500 weekly NFL and NCAA proposition bets.

Straight Football Bets

See Example Below. When betting on Michigan, you must win by at least 7 points to win your bet. When betting on Ohio State you cannot lose by more than 6 points to win the bet. If the line was exactly -6, and Michigan wins by exactly 6 points, then the bet is a “push”, and stake or money is returned to your account. (total bets): When betting on the total score of a game, you must take the OVER or the UNDER. Regardless of the outcome, the combined score of the two teams will determine if you win or lose your bet. Remember, overtime will always count for the 2 nd half and full game wagers. If you bet Ohio State to go OVER 40, and the final score is 28-12, your bet is a “push”, and the money will be returned to your account.

Football Money Line Bets

When betting on the money line, you must win the game straight up in order to win your bet. Betting on Michigan -290 means you must risk $290 to win $100. It does not matter by how many points Michigan wins, just that they win. Betting on Ohio State +240, you stake $100 to win $240. Again, in this case, Ohio State just needs to win straight up.

IN THE EVENT OF A POSTPONED OR SUSPENDED GAME, ALL FOOTBALL GAMES ARE CONSIDERED FINAL AFTER 55 MINUTES OF PLAY

Football Future Bets

Future bets, such as; to win any championship or any division, are graded as soon as the season or tournament is over.

The exception will be the two team teaser in the event of a win and a tie it will be graded as a push. Any loss will make the teaser a loser. Over the internet, Teasers are limited to 8 teams, and also to a specific payout:

Football Pleaser Bet Rules:

Pleaser bets are similar to a teaser bets, only you give, versus receive additional points; additional points are either subtracted from the underdog or added to the favorite (e.g., if the regular line on your selection is -4 and you select a pleaser, then your line would be -10). Pleasers are currently only available on NFL side bets combined with additional NFL side bets. (click here for odds info)

Pleaser bet payoffs depend on how many teams are in your wager. Payoffs are shown in the table below. If there is a tie in one or more of your individual parts then the bet steps down to the next lowest number of teams.

A 2 team pleaser bet with one tie is a push.
