2009-2010 Idaho Season Preview

This year the Vandals will have to deal with something they haven’t had in many years – high expectations.

Former Utah State assistant Don Verlin made a splash during his first year in Moscow, leading UI to its first winning season since 1998-99, a third-place tie in the WAC and its first postseason berth since 1990, with a second-round finish at the Collegelnsider.com Tournament. It’s not exactly cutting down the nets at the Final Four, but it’s a giant leap for a program that put together a 38-111 record the five seasons prior to last year.

Along with Verlin, Mac Hopson can take much of the credit for the dramatic turnaround. The transfer from nearby Washington State earned a first-team All-WAC nod and a spot on the All-Newcomer squad in his first season. Hopson, whose dad Phil starred for the Vandals in the early 1980s, led VI with 16.4 points per game, which included several clutch 3-pointers.

Hopson will get some big-time help this year with the addition of guard Steffan Johnson. While with Pacific, Johnson was a first-team All-Big West performer, averaging 14.5 points per game and playing nasty defense.

UI will count on continued contributions from another guard, Kashif Watson, who averaged 10.3 points per game last year, to help the Vandals improve on a scoring average of65.9 points – the seventh-worst total in the conference.

Scoring should improve substantially, however, especially if post Marvin Jefferson (9.1 ppg) and perimeter threat Luciano de Souza (63 3-pointers) can maintain or even build upon impressive initial seasons with Idaho. Both bring great size and athleticism to their positions.

Idaho returns four starters and made several solid additions while losing hardly any scorers. Barring injury, the Vandals have a legitimate shot at a conference title in a wide open WAC.
