Pitching Probables: Derek Lowe vs Jorge De La Rosa
I keep waiting for the Braves to collapse but they keep proving me wrong. They just seem to get the right combination to win more often than not and are just unbelievable in their last at bat. This is what we were saying about the the Rockies a few years ago and they just happen to be their opponent tonight. With the thin air at Coors Field you would think a notorious sinkerballer like Derek Lowe would thrive but you would be absolutely dead wrong. Lowe is only 3-4 forhis career in Denver with an ERA of 5.66, a full two runs higher than his career number. It appears he gets knocked around there just like everybody else, maybe more. Most obviously he really struggles with his command walking almost as many as he strikes out while for his career he is better 2:1. Coors is definitely not the place you want to be pitching with men on base all the time.
With about 5 weeks to go Colorado’s playoff candidacy is more technical than probable at this point. To be honest I am not sure who is surprised by this team’s performance. I thought they were about a .500 team coming into the season and that is about what they will be going out. But they do have great spoiler opportunities including this series against Atlanta where they have already taken game one. Jorge De La Rosa has looked pretty good of late – he hasn’t given up more than 3 runs in a start since July 22. Unfortunately, he rarely works deep into games, putting a lot of pressure on a bullpen that has underwhelmed. The Rockies are tough to beat at home (39-20) though and including De La Rosa (5-2) and that seems as good a reason as any to back the Rox. Tonight looks like a night where the Braves might give up some ground to Philadelphia.
Prediction: Look for Lowe to struggle again and the Rockies to emerge victorious. Nothing fancy just another solid victory.
