Pitching Probables: Max Scherzer vs. Daisuke Matsuzaka
As expected the Detroit Tigers haven’t been playing very well lately. With their depleted lineup they had won only three of nine heading into last night’s series opener and it didn’t look like there was any immediate help on the horizon. But perhaps the acquisition of Jhonny Peralta was bigger than we all expected. He hit two dingers last night as the Tigers collected their third win in a row against Boston this year behind Armando Gallarago, who didn’t even last long enough to get the decision. With their weakened lineup the Tigers are leaning even more upon pitching which isn’t really their strength. They have talent for sure but consistency has been a problem all year especially with today’s starter Max Scherzer. You just never know what you are going to get with him which makes him hard to back in any situation let alone on the road in a hitter’s park like Fenway.
Boston has really lost touch with the Yankees and Rays so it will be interesting to see if they make a move before the deadline today or not. They have had their injuries for sure but I think overall this team has underachieved, they just aren’t winning the games you expect them to – like dropping two to Seattle in their recent road trip. Starter Daisuke Matsuzaka has been better than expected this season I think. Whatever hype surrounded his arrival is long gone but he generally gives the team a chance to win each time out. The Sox will look to work over Scherzer with the second highest scoring offense in the league (over 5 runs/game. If Dice-K can last six innings and turn it over to what is still one of the better bullpens than the BoSox can get back into the winning column
Prediction: I just don’t trust Scherzer at all. He can be dominant but walks too many and the Tigers offense is pretty unpredictable right now. All reasons to back Boston.
