Pitching Probables: Chad Billingsley vs. Matt Cain

The Dodger stuck it to their rival last night with a 1-0 victory behind a masterful performance by Clayton Kershaw. That marked the fifth time this season (in 15 games) that one team has shutout the other – 4 to 1 in favour of San Francisco. The Dodgers have a good chance at a repeat performance with Chad Billingsley on the hill. Four times in his last 10 starts he has shutout opponents, including two starts against the Giants. Billingsley doesn’t have the same calibre stuff as Kershaw but he is the better “pitcher” right now. Even though they got the W, LA has proven again how much they struggle to score runs. They have won only 3 of their last ten and scoring more than 4 runs in a game only once.

The Giants have been playing well but dropping two of three to the Padres last week really hurt them. They enter tonight a full game and a half back needing every victory they can get to extend their season. The Giants have a very favourable schedule to finish the season, only one of the four remaining series is against a team in playoff contention, a three game set against Colorado next week. They need to take care of business now or it might not make a difference. Starter Matt Cain has been a big part of the Giants stretch run. San Fran has won 8 of his last 10 starts and with Tim Lincecum struggling he has been wearing the ace mantle lately. Unfortunately he is 1-8 lifetime against LA.

Prediction: I think that SF is going to battle to the end so a victory tonight is imperative. Cain may not have had much success against LA in the past but Dodgers offense is so bad these days. Take SF in another closer one.

San Francisco is -140 and the O/U is 6.5.
