Pitching Probables: Jonathan Sanchez vs. Tim Hudson

Things sure can change in a hurry. The Giants were looking at taking a commanding 2-0 lead in the series but their bullpen squandered the lead eventually losing the game in extra innings. Now they are in tough as game 3 will be the first pitching matchup of the series that doesn’t favour the Giants. Jonathan Sanchez has a great arm but walks more than he should. More importantly he has not been effective against Atlanta this year. In both of his starts he failed to make it through 5 innings and the Giants might find themselves in a bind after using so many pitchers in game 2. None of it will make a difference if they can’t put more runs on the board. They finished their scoring in the second and were essentially shutout for a full game thereafter.

By taking one of two in San Fran the Braves are in great shape as they have their ace on the mound for game three. Tim Hudson had an amazing season, his best since 2003. In two starts against the Giants this year he has been superb. In 15 innings against San Francisco he gave up only 6 hits and 2 runs so the Giants should be worried given their tendency to go into scoring droughts. The Braves won game 2 in typical fashion by scoring runs late in the ball game then the winner in extra innings. This time the unlikely hero was Rick Ankiel. Who will it be in game 3? How about Matt Diaz, the platoon outfielder who just crushes lefties (.335 for his career).

Prediction: Atlanta grabs another victory but doesn’t wait for last game heroics. Hudson is solid as always.

Atlanta is -135 and the O/U is 7.
