The Cleveland Indians will try and hold onto first-place in the AL Central with a win over the New York Yankees this Sunday afternoon in the finale of a three-game weekend series. Game time from Yankees Stadium is set for 1:05 p.m. and it will be broadcast nationally on TBS.

An 11-7 loss to New York on Friday night as a 144 road underdog dropped Cleveland to 34-27 on the year and shaved its lead over Detroit in the division to just one game. The Indians are now 4-12 in their last 16 games. They are 20-12 at home but have a losing record on the road at 14-15.

The seven runs scored on Friday night were the most Cleveland has mustered since scoring 13 runs in a win over Toronto on June1st. It only managed to score a total of 13 runs in the seven games between these two. Asdrubal Cabrera leads the team with 42 RBI but has only knocked in two runs in his last six games. He also leads the team in hits with 76 and home runs with 12.

The Indians will send Josh Tomlin to the mound on Sunday. He is 7-3 on the year with an ERA of 3.71 in 12 previous starts. Last time out he got tagged with a loss after giving up six earned runs on nine hits in six innings of work against Minnesota.

New York came into this series straight off a three-game sweep at the hands of its bitter rival Boston earlier in the week. To make matters worse, this setback knocked the Yankees out of first-place in the AL East and left them two games in back of the Red Sox. They are now 34-27 heading into Saturday’s game; 16-11 on the road and 18-16 at home.

Scoring has not been an issue for New York as it is ranked second in the American League with 317 runs for an average of 5.2 runs per game. The pitching staff is ranked fifth in the AL with a 3.73 team ERA but took a major hit this week when reliever Joba Chamberlain was lost for the season with a torn ligament in his throwing elbow. This follows the loss of Rafael Soriano for six to eight weeks with an elbow injury of his own.

Freddy Garcia will get the start for the Yankees in this one. He is 4-5 with a 3.86 ERA in 10 starts. He was pulled in the second inning of his last outing after giving up four quick runs on four hits to the Red Sox this past Tuesday. Lifetime against Cleveland, Garcia is 6-6 with an ERA of 4.06.

C.B. Bucknor will be behind home plate for this game. The total has gone 6-7 in 13 of his previous called games this season. The average runs scored were of 8.54.

Cleveland is 15-9 as a favorite this season and 19-18 as an underdog. The total has stayed ‘under’ in four of its last six games but is 34-25-2 overall.

New York is 8-10 as an underdog and 26-17 as a favorite. The total has gone ‘over’ in its last three games and is 29-26-6 on the year.

Head-to-head, Friday’s game was the first between the two this season. The Yankees won six of eight games in 2010 and was 5-3 in eight games in 2009. The total has gone ‘over’ in the last two meetings.

The odds makers have the New York Yankees as a -1.5 point favorite with an run total of 10.

Prediction: Cleveland’s surprising start is suddenly producing some very predictable results. Stick with New York to add to the Indians’ free-fall with another win on Sunday.
