Seattle’s current losing streak reached 13 heading into Saturday’s contest after a 7-4 loss to Boston on Friday night as 139 road underdog. The loss dropped the Mariners to 43-56 and 13.5 games behind Texas in the AL West. They are 25-27 at home and 18-29 on the road this year.

During this skid, Seattle has only managed to score a total of 31 runs for an average of just 2.39 runs a game. Michael Pineda is slated to get the start for the Mariners on Sunday. The right-handed rookie has been impressive this season with an 8-6 record and an ERA of 3.24 in 19 starts. He has struggled in his last two outings, giving up 12 earned runs in just 11.1 innings of work.

Boston’s win on Friday raised its record to 5-2 since the All-Star break and an AL-best 60-37 overall. The Red Sox are holding onto a two-game lead over New York in the AL East which has now become a two-team race with the recent demise of Tampa Bay. They are 31-20 on the road this season and 29-17 at home.

The seven runs scored in Game 1 of this series raised the Red Sox league-leading total to 526, which is an average of 5.42 runs per game. Adrian Gonzalez has led the way with a league-high 80 RBI and 17 home runs and Kevin Youkilis is second on the team in runs batted in with 70.

Boston will send Tim Wakefield to the mound in this one. He was also knocked around pretty good in his last start, giving up seven runs on nine hits over just 4.1 innings. Overall this season, Wakefield is 5-3 with a 4.80 ERA. Lifetime against the Mariners, he is just 1-7 with an ERA of 3.45.

Head-to-head this season, the Mariners won two of three at Fenway earlier in the season before Friday’s loss. The total is evenly split 2-2 with Game 1 of this series going ‘over’ the 8.5 run total. The Red Sox had a 7-3 edge in 2010 with the total staying ‘under’ in seven of the 10 games.

Stick with Boston in the series finale as its lineup feasts on a rookie pitcher while Wakefield returns to form to shut the Mariners down.

The odds makers have the Boston Red Sox as a -1.5 point favorite with an run total of 9.
