Pitching Probables: Pat Misch vs. Jair Jurrjens

The Mets are a .500 team and this series against Atlanta represents a last ditch hope to get back into the race.  Too bad for them tonight’s opponent and division rival Atlanta is such a good home team, they are a majors best 46-18 so far.  The Mets can draw hope from the fact that a couple of those losses were at their hands but they would feel much better if they had one of their better starters lined up for the series opener instead of Pat Misch.  He hasn’t pitched awfully but the Mets have not won any of the three starts Misch has made this season.  The Mets have scored a grand total of 6 runs in those three games so it is clear that they are not giving him much of a chance to win even though he is giving a quality start every time out.  No matter how much they tinker with the lineup the Mets just keep struggling to score.

Atlanta sputtered on the road recently but righted itself at home over the weekend beating the Marlins two out of three.  Once again they worked their late game magic scoring six in the last two innings to snatch a victory from Florida yesterday.  This team just won’t quit.  Now they face the Mets, who they can essentially eliminate from contention with a series win or sweep.  Given how hot this team is at home this season it seems like an inevitability.  On the hill, Jair Jurrjens has take a step back this year and was rocked at Coors by the Rockies his last time out.  That ended a run of 5 straight quality starts.  He is a very sharp 6-2 against Los Mets for his career and is showing dramatic splits with a sparkling 1.81 home ERA.  Both numbers bode well for this evening.

Prediction:  Atlanta will win the series opener the way they have won all year long…late.  Who will be the hero tonight?
