MLB American League Power Rankings

The 2010 Major League Baseball regular season is over a third of the way complete and after the first 10 weeks of action some teams have made an early statement they hope to carry right through this summer while some others are already digging themselves an early hole they may not be able to climb out of.

All 14 American League teams still have the dream of making it all the way to this year’s World Series, but in reality there are only a handful of teams that actually have a chance. Here is a look at my top four teams in the AL after the first half of June and their current odds to win the Pennant and the World Series.

New York Yankees Odds to win the AL Pennant 8-5 World Series 5-2

Given the fact that New York is currently tied with Tampa atop the AL East with an identical 40-23 record, they grab the top spot in the rankings by virtue of their 7-3 record over their last 10 games, including a three game sweep of Houston over the weekend. The Yankees remain the most balanced team in the American League as they are ranked third overall in pitching with a team ERA of 3.82 and first overall in hitting with a team batting average of .280. They also lead the AL in runs scored with 355.

Tampa Bay Rays Odds to win the AL Pennant 3-1 World Series 11-2

Tampa’s lead in the division has slipped away as they now find themselves in a dog fight with the Yankees while Boston is starting to make a move and are just four games back. They have gone 5-5 in their last 10 games, including losing two out of three to the Marlins over the weekend. The Rays still lead the AL with a team ERA of 3.46 which is fourth lowest in the Majors. Their bats on the other hand have been inconsistent at best and with a team batting average of .262 they find themselves in the middle of the pack in the AL. They are ranked third in the AL in runs scored with 333.

Minnesota Twins Odds to win the AL Pennant 8-1 World Series 14-1

While it may not always be glamorous, Minnesota continues to hold onto the lead in the AL Central. At 36-27 they have a 2 ½ game lead over Detroit and a 7 ½ game lead over Chicago. They are 5-5 in their last 10 and 1-3 in their last four. The Twins pitching has carried them so far as they are ranked second in the AL with a team ERA of 3.72. Their team batting average of .268 ranks them sixth in the league and they are seventh in runs scored with 295.

Texas Rangers Odds to win the AL Pennant 13-1 World Series 30-1

Texas continues to battle with Los Angeles for control of the AL West and at 35-28 they currently have a ½ game lead over the Angels. The Rangers have gone 7-3 in their last 10 games, including winning their last two against Milwaukee this weekend. At 23-11 they have the best home record in the American League. With a team ERA of 4.12 they are ranked sixth in the league, while their .277 team batting average ranks them second behind New York. They are fourth in the league in runs scored with 321.
