MLB National League Power Rankings

MLB National League Power Rankings- June 28th

The 2010 Major League Baseball regular season is heading toward the halfway point and after the first 12 weeks of action some teams have made an early statement they hope to carry right through this summer while some others are already digging themselves a hole they may not be able to climb out of.

All 16 National League teams started the season dreaming of making it all the way to this year’s World Series, but in reality there are only a handful of teams that actually still have a chance. Here is a look at my top four teams in the NL as we close out the month of June along with their updated odds to win the Pennant as well as the World Series.

Atlanta Braves Odds to Win the NL Pennant 7-2 World Series 8-1

After winning seven out of eight games, Atlanta has cooled a bit, dropping four of their last six including a three game sweep at the hands of the White Sox this past week. At 44-32 they have a ½ game lead over the Mets and a 2 ½ game lead over Philadelphia in the NL East. With a team ERA of 3.8 the Braves are ranked sixth in the NL. At .261, they are ranked third in the NL in team batting average. They are also ranked third in runs scored with 363, an average of 4.78 per game.

San Diego Padres Odds to Win the NL Pennant 12-1 World Series 40-1

San Diego continues to be one of the biggest surprises of the year as after 75 games they lead San Francisco by 4 ½ games in the NL West with an overall record of 45-30, the best in the NL. The Padres have won six out of their last seven including a three game sweep of the Marlins this past weekend. The primary strength of this team lies in their pitching as they lead the Major League with a team ERA of just 2.99. From a hitting standpoint, they are ranked 14th in the NL with .245 team batting average and have score 307 total runs, an average of just over four per game.

Cincinnati Reds Odds to Win the NL Pennant 15-1 World Series 40-1

With Cincinnati and St. Louis taking turns atop the NL Central, this week the Reds find themselves in first place with a record of 42-34, just a ½ game ahead of the Cardinals. They have won five of their last six including a three game sweep of Oakland last week. While their team ERA is 4.40, ranking them 12th in the NL, their bats have more than made up for it. They are ranked first in the NL in team batting average (.273) and runs scored (369). Their 4.86 runs per game average is second to only Milwaukee in the league.

New York Mets Odds to Win the NL Pennant 8-1 World Series 18-1

Winning eight of their past 11 games, New York has been able to keep pace with Braves in the NL East. At 43-32 they are just a ½ game back in the division and lead the wildcard race. This past week they took two out of three from both Detroit and Minnesota, finishing up the latest round of interleague play. The Mets are starting to develop a solid balance between pitching and hitting as they are ranked fourth in the NL with a team ERA of 3.68 and seventh in the league with a team batting average of .260. They are ranked eighth in the league in total runs scored with 346, and average of 4.61 per game.
