The New York Yankees stood pat at the trading deadline drawing a lot of heat from the media. As it stands right now this team is very well positioned to make the playoffs again even if their rotation is iffy after C.C. Sabathia. That “iffyness” is due in no small part to the performance of tonight’s starter, the enigmatic A.J. Burnett. Burnett teases you from time to time with dominant stuff but his term in the Bronx has yielded more disappointment than anything else. Stuff wise he is among the most talented in the majors but his makeup begs for an upgrade. Burnett’s record against the White Sox is spotty as the Yankees have lost all three of his starts against the pale hose since he joined the club. It is amazing how much Burnett struggles given the offensive firepower the Yankees have. He is getting more than 4 runs per game of support which isn’t to bad. You would think given the Yankes record that he would be better than 8-9.
The Chicago White Sox made a few minor moves at the deadline to try and make up some ground in the American League Central. Mostly they have to be hoping that disappointing seasons by players including Adam Dunn and Alex Rios turnaround in time to make a push for the playoffs. They offloaded a starter (Edwin Jackson) to get some more bullpen depth and will be working with a 5 man rotation from here on out (back to normal). Gavin Floyd has been very steady this season and leads the team with 9 wins. He was very sharp in an April start against the Yankees striking out 10 over eight innings in a victory. The White Sox are 4-1 when he pitches against the Bronx Bombers – not bad given the Yankees winning ways over the last few season.
The odds makers have the New York Yankees as a -1.5 point favorite with an run total of 9.
Prediction: Backing the Sox tonight. It just never makes me comfortable putting my money behind Burnett and the Sox are more than capable hanging with the Yankees offensively.
