Mets fans had a couple of things to cheer about on Wednesday evening.

The first being a an overwhelming roar after watching a video on the big screen in center field of Landon Donovan’s winning goal in stoppage time for the United States at the World Cup, and the second being the Mets 5-0 win over the Detroit Tigers in game two of a three game set at Citi Field.

New York, who won for the 21st time in 28 games and improved to 26-10 at home this season, have outscored the Tigers 19-6 over the first two games, while handing Detroit their third loss in 11 games. The win also marks the Mets interleague record at 11-3, a big improvement after going 5-10 against the AL last year.

Mets center fielder Angel Pagan, who has been a red-hot replacement or an injured Carlos Beltran, was lifted for a pinch hitter in the seventh inning of game two after experiencing spasms in his right side. He will likely sit out Thursday night as a precaution.

Meanwhile, Detroit’s offense continues to be on ice. Slugger Miguel Cabrera, who leads the club with 19 home runs, has gone just 2-for-8 in the series thus far with a pair of singles, while batting leader Magglio Ordonez has just one hit in eight at-bats.

The Tigers will try to avoid the sweep by calling on young hurler Armando Galarraga. The righty
gave up four runs and seven hits in 4 1/3 innings Friday against Arizona. This was his third consecutive no-decision since throwing his nearly perfect game against Cleveland back on Jun 2. Galarraga walked two and struck out two as his ERA climbed to 3.32. He is 0-1 (two starts) lifetime against the Mets with an ERA of 6.52.

New York will cast their lot on 35-year old Japanese-born Hisanori Takahashi, who retained his spot in the starting rotation following a second straight solid outing on Friday against the Yankees. The lefty led the Mets to a win a 4-0 win over their cross town rivals, pitching six scoreless innings, while yielding four hits and two runs while striking out three. Takahashi is 4-1 in 13 appearances (three starts) against Detroit with a WHIP of 1.11.

The odds makers have the Mets as 1-½ favorites with a run total of 8.

The Mets are on fire, while the Tigers offense seems to be on moratorium. I expect the New York to sweep the series and the UNDER.
