New York lost Game 1 of this series on Monday night 6-3 as a 121 road favorite, but rode the hot arm of C.C. Sabathia last night with 9-2 drubbing of the Indians as a 159 favorite. Monday’s game ended as a ‘push’ against a total line of nine and last night’s game went well ‘over’ the 7.5-run line.

The Yankees have won eight of their last 10 games and have opened up a game and a half lead over Boston in the AL East. They have the best overall record in the American League at 51-33 and are 28-18 at home and 23-15 on the road.

Phil Hughes went on the DL on April 14 with inflammation in his throwing shoulder, but has been cleared to throw and is expected to make his long awaited return to New York’s rotation tonight. He is 2-0 against the Indians in his career with a 3.50 ERA.

Cleveland has been able to maintain a 1.5 game lead over Detroit in the AL Central with a 3-2 record in its last five games. The Indians are 20-24 on the road this season and 25-15 at home, but they have only managed to win six of their last 15 games at Progressive Field.

Scoring has not been an issue for Cleveland recently after pounding out an average of 5.29 runs per game over its last seven before last night’s two-run struggle against Sabathia. This has been a welcomed uptick as compared to its season average of 4.33 runs per game, which is ranked seventh in the AL.

Justin Masterson is slated to get the start tonight for the Indians. He secured his first win since late April this past Friday after holding Cincinnati to just one run on four hits in eight full innings of work. He now has a record of 6-6 with a 2.85 ERA in 17 starts. Masterson is 1-2 lifetime against New York with an ERA of 3.80.

The odds makers have the Cleveland Indians as a -1.5 point favorite with an run total of 9.

Prediction: Head-to-head, the Yankees won three of four at home earlier this season and have a 4-2 edge in the overall series. The total has been evenly split across the board at 2-2-2. Tonight’s game could setup as a slugfest for both teams, but stick with the Indians to take advantage of a rusty Hughes to get the win.
