After Tuesday’s game was postponed due to rain, the Tigers and Yankees will play a double header of games two and three of a four-game series starting at 1:05 PM EST on Wednesday at Comerica Park.

Both teams are looking to gain ground on the leaders in the respective divisions so trying to grab a pair of wins in one day will be important.

The Tigers began the series with a 5-4 win on Monday on Brennan Boesch’s RBI triple in the seventh as Jose Vavlverde closed the game striking out the Yankees final three batters to secure the win. Boesch has 10 RBIs in five home games, while the Yanks Mark Teixeira, whose two-run home run pulled New York within a run in the third inning, has four homers in his last three games.

The Yankees will try and avoid their first three-game losing streak while ending Detroit’s six-game home win streak when they start veteran Javier Vazquez on the mound in game two. The veteran righty is 1-3 on the season with a 9.78 ERA over 23 innings and has walked 15 batters with a 2.04 WHIP. Detroit will counter with Rick Porcello. After a promising rookie year, the right-hander has completed six innings only once in six starts and given up five or more runs in four straight appearances.

Game two odds have not been posted at the time of this writing, but I expect an offensive explosion from both sides courtesy of some subpar pitching. Hard to pick this one, but my play is on the pinstripes.

New York will start right-handed pitcher Phil Hughes in game three. Hughes has been spectacular this season and has not allowed more than two earned runs in any of his starts. He also has 31 strikeouts in 32 innings pitched. The 24-year old — 2004 1st round draft pick pitched seven strong innings on Friday night, allowing only two runs off seven hits against the Red Sox. Hughes struck out seven on his way to his four win of the year and now has a 1.69 ERA. He is 2-2 in five career appearances (three starts) against Detroit with a 5.30 ERA.

The Tigers will roll the dice in Wednesday’s second contest and start righty Jeremy Bonderman, who hit a stroke of good luck in his last outing as a rain postponement washed away a miserable 2 1/3 innings start. Bonderman allowed six earned runs on seven hits, including a pair of home runs before Mother Nature came to his aide. He walked one and struck out three. He’s 3-7 with a 5.55 ERA in his career against the Yankees.

Game three odds have the Yankees as –1-½ – favorites with a run total of 9 ½.

Considering Boderman’s last few a starts, the Tigers could get in a hole early on and have to fight their way back, which could prove costly. I expect a close game with New York taking game three and the UNDER.
