Brad Keselowski 2009 Recap & Review

elowski had a superb year in Nationwide competition, winning four races and scoring 28 top 10 finishes en route to a top 3 points finish, but it was his win at Talladega that escalated him from prospect to superstar in the making. And it wasn’t just his plate racing prowess (he finished top 10 at Talladega in the fall as well) that was impressive on the Cup side…Keselowski scored a top 10 finish at Darlington, and scored top 15 runs at both Kansas and Charlotte (he had another going at Chicago before blowing a tire late). His numbers in a part-time Cup effort exceeded those of every rookie out there in recent memory that has attempted a part-time Cup slate on their way up the ladder, and there wasn’t a soul out there, fan or foe, that would deny Keselowski was ready for the full-time ride he has with the No. 12 at Penske Racing.

The big news for Keselowski though was just that…his move from NASCAR juggernaut Hendrick Motorsports to the Penske camp. There were plenty out there (this writer included) that saw Keselowski’s move as short-sighted, and his runs in the No. 12 car that is now his during the final three races of 2009 were less than impressive (a best finish of 25th, an average finish of 32.3). But the deal is done, and now Keselowski faces the challenge of taking a No. 12 car that was already struggling with David Stremme (via Ryan Newman) and bringing it up to the level of teammates Kurt Busch and the much-improved Sam Hornish, Jr.

Still, looking back at 2009, it’s hard to call his season anything but a success. Four Nationwide Series wins, a Cup race win, and now full-time rides in both the Nationwide and Cup Series have come his way! Not too bad for a guy who just a few seasons ago was toiling with the underfunded and now extinct Keith Coleman Racing.

Brad Keselowski 2010 Preview & Prediction

If ever there was a driver with something to prove, it’s Brad Keselowski. He comes to the Sprint Cup Series for his first year as a full-time driver aligned with a new owner and driving a new make.

In only 17 Cup events, “BK” has already shown a flair for the dramatic. In his fifth career start, he scored his first victory, getting by Carl Edwards after an ill-timed block left Edwards sailing into the frontstretch catchfence at Talladega. It was easily the highlight of a year in which he scored four top-10 finishes in 15 Cup events and left a trail of dented egos in his wake. On-track skirmishes with Edwards, Juan Pablo Montoya and Denny Hamlin led the latter to call him an “idiot” before spinning Keselowski out intentionally to end the year.

Most of those ruffled feathers came courtesy of the Nationwide Series, where Keselowski rode top-level equipment at JR Motorsports to two straight third-place finishes in the standings. But after spurning a long-term future in Hendrick equipment, Keselowski should find it far more challenging to run up front this season.

Despite aligning himself with a top-level owner in Roger Penske, he takes over a No. 12 Dodge that went without a top 10 last season, chugging to an average finish of 21.5. He’ll also be adapting to a new head wrench, with Jay Guy coming over to call the shots after doing so much with so little at Furniture Row Racing. He, like the other new pieces, should provide the foundation of a solid support system, as both Dodge and primary sponsor Verizon are focused on giving their new acquisition the best possible chance to succeed.

Whether the No. 12 team follows through depends on whether both driver and owner can co-exist. Penske, known for having a clean-cut reputation, has stepped out of his comfort zone in hiring the aggressive, temperamental Keselowski. The last time he did that, with Kurt Busch, it worked. But Busch didn’t ask for 100 extra personnel the second he signed on the dotted line, either, a brash move that shows that this driver’s unafraid to speak his mind.
