The 2009 season was similar to those Sadler has experienced since moving to what was then Gillett-Evernham Motorsports midway through the 2006 season. The good news? Sadler only had two DNFs this season, crashing out at Fontana and Homestead. The bad news? He equaled that number in top 10 qualifying positions. With six starts of 40th place or worse, it makes it nearly impossible to fight back for top finishes.

Athletes love stability. Elliott Sadler spent last year dealing with what happens when you lose it. Even before the engines fired at Daytona, he was threatening to file a lawsuit against his team, which temporarily released him despite a contract that runs through 2010. Just weeks after that was settled, he came to Daytona on a mission, proving to be an upset contender to win the series’ biggest race … until Matt Kenseth passed him one lap before the race-ending rains came. That 1-2 punch in a two-month span left him a broken man, and he never recovered during a season in which uncertainty popped up at every turn. A crew chief change, sponsorship issues and a merger announcement caused their share of upheaval and lackluster performances on the track, resulting in Sadler’s worst finishing position in the final standings (26th) since 2000.

So what will the well-rested Sadler face when Daytona arrives? Plenty of changes, following a well-publicized merger of his Richard Petty Motorsports team with Yates Racing. The No. 19 car will be housed in a new shop, and inside the freshly Petty blue-painted building in Concord, N.C., it’ll share quarters with three teammates driving a stable of Fords instead of Dodges. A shuffle atop the hierarchy, with Robbie Loomis moving into the role of Competition Director and Sammy Johns the Director of Operations, is a new development as well. In fact, the only guaranteed return is crew chief Wally Rogers, who’s only been with Sadler since August ’09.

The prospect of jumping back into a Ford — the nameplate Sadler has driven to all three of his career points-paying wins with — has him even more upbeat.

So will all of these changes lead to a reversal of fortune on the track? Don’t bet on it. Teammate Kasey Kahne, the only driver on the team who had any measurable success last year, is likely on his way out the door by the end of this season because of all of the upheaval. Sadler’s contract is an issue as well, with no extension reached and rumors persisting that he’s on the hot seat.

But great is a tall order in the face of instability. For Sadler, simply maintaining his spot on the grid is more realistic.
