Greg Biffle 2009 Recap & Review

Last season can be summarized for Greg Biffle in two words: missed opportunities. After scoring top-10 finishes in two of the first three races, a crash at Atlanta and an engine failure at Bristol halted any serious momentum. Then, at Texas in April, Biffle led 93 laps only to have a miscue on pit road end any chance at the win. Victory was. snatched away a second time just four races later, when, after leading a race-high 117 laps at Darlington, poor pit strategy left him back in the pack, leading to contact with the Turn 4 wall in traffic that dropped him to eighth at the finish.

Biffle kept riding those roller coaster weekends. For every top 5 at tracks like Dover and Michigan (after running out of fuel while leading), there was a 28th at Sonoma and 31st at Chicago to sap his confidence. It took a stretch of strong runs at his weakest tracks (fourth at Indianapolis, fifth at Watkins Glen) for him to lock up a playoff spot, sneaking into the Chase by 54 points over Kyle Busch.

As the playoffs began, Biffle hoped to wear a second straight Cinderella slipper, repeating his U come out of nowhere” performance that led to two wins and a third-place finish in the 2008 playoffs. But those wins never came, and Biffle’s title bid was seemingly derailed by a third in the Chase’s third race, Kansas, where he led 113 laps only to fall short of Victory Lane.

An average finish of 20th in the next three weeks followed, and after only four top l0s in the playoffs, Biffle was doomed to settle for seventh in the final standings.

Greg Biffle 2010 Preview & Prediction

Greg Biffle’s quest to become the first driver to win a championship in each of NASCAR’s three major series was delayed another year after a disappointing seventh-place finish in the 2009 Cup standings. Perhaps more painful for Biffle than not winning the title was the fact that for the first time since he joined the Cup Series full-time in 2003, the season ended without at least one trip to Victory Lane. He certainly had his chances, but fate and circumstance had different ideas for the driver of the No. 16 3M Ford.

The team’s only trips to Victory Lane were Matt Kenseth’s two early season wins and Jamie McMurray’s surprise triumph at Talladega in November. As was the case with the other teams, there wasn’t one glaring problem that Biffle encountered that kept him out of Victory Lane, which leaves the team with a difficult task ahead as it works to return to championship contention.

Biffle has been paired with crew chief Greg Erwin since May 2007, and together they’ve won three races to go along with two consecutive Chase appearances. But the duo suffered bad luck on pit strategy more than once in ’09, decisions that left Biffle buried back in traffic after spending most of the race running up front. Could that be enough to force a change as 2010 draws near, despite the fact the No. 16 was the highest-finishing Roush car in the standings?

Over the course of a frustrating year, Biffle’s psyche also seemed to take a hit, with Jimmie Johnson’s success seemingly getting in Biffle’s head. After struggling to 13th at Dover, he claimed the winning No. 48 team got an unfair advantage by participating in an August tire test at the track, an accusation that lingered on and appeared to throw his team off its game. By Homestead, Biffle appeared ready to capitulate to Johnson three months before the 2010 season even started.

That’s not the inspiring answer you need from a team looking to make a championship run. Expect Biffle to get back to Victory Lane, but notching a win or two and making the Chase may be the best he can hope for.
