Jamie McMurray 2009 Recap & Review

In some ways, McMurray’s 2009 season was the most consistent in his four-year Roush career. Running at the finish in 34 of 36 races, he fell out once due to a crash and once due to an engine failure to complete 96% of the overall laps run. The win at Talladega was his only top 5 finish, but he had five top 10s and was also second in two special races, the Bud Shootout and the Sprint Showdown.

But when all was said and done, McMurray ended his tenure the poster boy for racing mediocrity — posting an average starting position of 22nd and an average finish of 21st. Yet despite missing the Chase in all four years with Roush Fenway, McMurray expresses no regrets about leaving Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates after the 2005 season.

Jamie McMurray 2010 Preview & Prediction

t wasn’t exactly earth-shattering news when word came in the middle of last season that Roush Fenway Racing had given Jamie McMurray permission to talk to other teams about a ride for 2010. With a deadline to cut back to four teams looming, it only seemed like a matter of time before McMurray, who seemingly spent the last two seasons at RFR as a lame duck, was officially cut loose. While the veteran put up a brave front behind the wheel of the No. 26 — scoring a win at Talladega in November — a drop to five top-10 runs and a 22nd-place finish in points put his future employment in question.

That’s when an old friend popped up to give the 33-year-old a second chance. Despite the apprehension of sponsor Bass Pro Shops, which was rumored to be looking for someone a bit more on the “outdoorsy” side, the official reunion of McMurray with Chip Ganassi was announced just before the final race of the ’09 season.

It’s true that McMurray had his best statistical years with Ganassi from 2002-05, falling just short of the Chase twice, but that’s no guarantee of future success. A second chance means he’ll be playing second fiddle, this time to Juan Pablo Montoya, who is clearly the top dog at EGR. The No. 1 Chevy that McMurray inherits also produced as many top 5s (one) as he had wins last season. So familiarity can only help, as crew chief Kevin “Bono” Manion returns with a crew filled with people McMurray knows well.

McMurray may get in position to steal a win this season, but double digit top 10s and a top-20 points finish would be the more realistic vision for this team.
