NASCAR Richmond 400 – Preview, Predictions, Odds

The 10th Sprint Cup race of the 2010 NASCAR season takes us to Richmond International Speedway in Virginia for the Heath Calhoun 400 this Saturday night starting at 7:30 P.M. This is the first of two races scheduled for Richmond with the next one being on September 11th. Kevin Harvick won last week in Talladega to notch his first Sprint Cup victory of the year, but Jimmie Johnson is still dominating this season with three wins and six top 10 finishes. He currently holds the top spot in the Sprint Cup standings with 1323 points. Johnson is the odds-on-favorite to win again this week, but there are a few drivers that might have something to say about that. The following is a preview of the top seven drivers in the Sprint Cup point standings along with their current odds to win this week.

Jimmie Johnson 5-1

Johnson wrecked last week in Talladega finishing 31st but still retained the top spot in the standings with 1323 points. Last year in this race he started 15th and finished 36th. He won this race in 2007 after starting fourth. He went on to win the second race at Richmond that year as well. Johnson only has four top 10 finishes at this track in 16 career starts, but they were three wins and a second.

Kevin Harvick 12-1

With Harvick’s win last week at Talladega he moved into second place with 1297 points, just 26 back. Last year in this race he started in the 19th spot and finished 34th. His best career finish in this race was in 2006 when he started from the eighth position and finished 3rd. He has ten top 10 finishes at this track including a win in the second race in 2006. He has five top 10 finishes in this race.

Greg Biffle 20-1

Biffle was able to hold down third in the standings with 1237 points, 86 out of the lead. Last year in this race he started 20th and ended up in 17th place. His best finish ever in this race was in 2006 when he finished fourth after starting from the pole position. From 2004-2006 he finished in the top 10 in five of the six races he ran at Richmond.

Matt Kenseth 20-1

Kenseth fell two places in the standings and is currently fourth with 1224 points, 99 back. Last year in this race he started way back in 35th place and managed to work his way to a 17th place finish. His best ever finish was in 2004 when he started 29th and finished fifth. He has nine career top 10 finishes at this track including one win. He has five top 10 finishes in this race.

Kyle Busch 8-1

Kyle Busch moved up one spot in the standings with 1163 points, 160 out of the lead. At a race track he absolutely loves, Busch finally broke through and won this race last year after starting 14th. In his 10 career starts at Richmond he has eight top five finishes including four in this race.

Mark Martin 8-1

Martin moved back into the top seven with 1154 points, 169 behind Johnson. Last year in this race he started seventh and finished fifth. His best career finish in this race was in 1999 when he started 12th and finished second. Martin has 26 top 10 finishes at this track, but only one win way back in 1990. He is still one to watch as he has finished in the top five in his last four races here.

Kurt Busch 12-1

Kurt Busch also moved back into the top seven with 1146 points, 177 out of the lead. Last year in this race he started 17th and finished 12th. His best career finish in this race was fifth in 2007 after starting 33rd. He has six top ten finishes at this track with one victory in 2005. He has two top 10 finishes in this race.
