Dallas Mavericks 2010 Preview & Prediction

Forever in search of a capable sidekick, the best player in Mavericks franchise history watched another summer go by without the addition of a legit star alongside him. And he did it with a pay cut, too. Once again, Dirk Nowitzki will go into a season knowing that he has to be the lead horse and that there really isn’t anything closely resembling astud around him. We’ve all seen this act and know how it turns out. In three of the last four years it has been a first-round exit in the playoffs. So, why should Nowitzki expect any different outcome this season? Well, part of the reason is that he and the Mavericks are falling back on the old notion that a full training camp with Caron Butler and Brendan Haywood, who joined at the trading deadline last season, will make a difference. And it should. When Jason Kidd went through his first training camp after arriving in midseason the year before, it was the only time the Mavericks got out of the first round since 2006. But from Nowitzki’s point of view, don’t you think it will take more than that? He’s the NBA’s poster child for loyalty. He has been with the Mavericks for all of his 12-year career and has signed on with Mark Cuban for another 4 years. He will be paid $2 million less this season than last, and he’s a realist on top of adhering to the company line.

Dallas Mavericks Coach: Rick Carlisle (3rd season)

Dallas Mavericks Projected Starters: PG Jason Kidd, SG Caron Butler, SF Shawn Marion, PF Dirk Nowitzki, C Brendan Haywood.

Dallas Mavericks Key Additions: C Tyson Chandler.

Dallas Mavericks Key Losses: C Erick Dampier.

2010 Dallas Mavericks Point Guards:

Kidd is 37 and officially a mentor after spending part of the summer working at the Team USA mini-camp in Las Vegas. Maybe he ducked out of practices to make the early-bird dinner, got the senior’s discount on a hotel room and took early boarding on the plane, because he needed extra time. Or maybe not. Kidd just finished fifth in the league in assists, at 9.1 a game. He shot 42.5 percent from behind the arc, a career high and 11th best in the NBA in a development no one could have seen coming given his history of poor range. So not slowing down extends all the way to logging 36 minutes a game, down only slightly from his career average. That’s encouraging enough for the Mavericks. Rodrigue Beaubois suffered a foot injury while training with the French team for the World Championships this summer and will need surgery. He was coming off a rookie season that included 16 starts, flashes of excitement and the kind of speed that compensates for feathering in at 6-feet, 170. Jose Barea had a larger role in 2009-10, but he’s also slight (6-0, 175), so somebody’s going to have to stand on somebody’s shoulders at some point.

2010 Dallas Mavericks Off Guards:

Butler, officially listed as a third forward in the starting lineup, arrived from the Wizards in a midseason deal that was supposed to push the Mavericks into contender status. It didn’t. He shot 44 percent in 27 appearances for Dallas, all starts, and the opposing shooting guard, Manu Ginobili of the Spurs, averaged 19 points and five assists in the first round, though Ginobili made just 41.7 percent of his attempts in the six games. Now Butler gets a training camp and an entire season with the Mavs, as opposed to transitioning on the run, while trying to recapture the level of play that made him an Eastern Conference All-Star in 2007. He’s a long shot to return to the midseason showcase while playing in the West, but can have a major say in the outcome of the Southwest Division and possibly even the conference if he nudges closer to becoming a 20-point scorer again – the ideal complementary piece for Nowitzki. Terry has had that role for years and remains a key part of the backcourt rotation off the bench, as does DeShawn Stevenson. Beaubois has played some shooting guard, despite the physical shortcomings and lived to tell. First-round pick Dominique Jones will probably get his minutes there.

2010 Dallas Mavericks Small Forwards:

Shawn Marion doesn’t have the kind of role in Dallas that had previously come to showcase his offensive potential- averaging just 12 points a game in 2009-10 while making 50.8 percent of the attempts means he’s just not getting the kind of looks as in the old days with the Suns. It just doesn’t feel Matrix-y. The value of Marion is that he defends, can also play power forward in a small lineup and that he is still capable of being an effective scorer, which is enough sometimes to create openings for Nowitzki. Tim Thomas returned as a free agent with the plan of providing shooting for the second unit and could also get time at power forward. Butler, of course, will get minutes here, pending the Mavs finding someone to replace him at shooting guard.

2010 Dallas Mavericks Power Forwards:

Dallas management made all the right statements about wanting Nowitzki back, planning to travel to Germany to be on his doorstep the moment free agency began, but it was impossible to find anyone in the league who believed he gave genuine thought to leaving. The Mavericks like him, he likes them, he is so identified with the team after 12 seasons, end of story. If he isn’t going anywhere, neither are the Mavs. Nowitzki had a very good 2009-10 in most every category except rebounding and shows no sign of acting 32. And, again, a versatile lineup gives Carlisle a lot of choices. Marion at power forward, Chandler or Brendan Haywood at power forward for short bursts in what would actually be a two-center lineup that will mess with opposing alignments. Thomas at power forward. As if just having Nowitzki isn’t enough.

2010 Dallas Mavericks Centers:

A year ago at this time, everyone was wondering how Erick Dampier would hold up, and now the Mavericks have Brendan Haywood and Chandler. Not exactly pairing Chamberlain and Russell in their prime, but an obvious gain at the position and, most importantly, potentially enough of a gain to make a difference in a conference where a few extra wins can mean a spring in the standings. Put it this way: If Chandler is your second-best center, that’s a very solid position. Not only has he spent most of his career as a starter, after all, but he is just two seasons removed from averaging doublefigure rebounds and turns only 28 on Oct. 2. Health permitting, and that has been a concern, Chandler is only now into his prime. The Mavericks also added third-year 7-footer Alexis Ajinca, a former first-round pick who never made an impact in Charlotte, in the trade that delivered Chandler.
