Golden State Warriors 2009-2010 Preview & Prediction

Should the Warriors’ start slowly and even if they start fast, Nelson must decide how much to use his young players at the expense of the veterans. Jackson and Maggette are getting older, and Nelson’s history is one of avoiding playing young guys. But he doesn’t have a choice if he’s developing a long-range plan for the team. Jackson and Maggette produced solid numbers, but at the expense of team chemistry and wins.

The future nucleus of the Warriors is with Ellis, the two Anthonys, Biedrins and Curry. However, Jackson and Maggerte won’t take kindly to a cut in minutes. Whatever decision Nelson makes, more drama is likely to follow.

Golden State Warriors Coach: Don Nelson (4th season)

Golden State Warriors Returning Players: Guards Kelenna Azubuike, Monta Ellis, Anthony Morrow, C.J. Watson; center Andris Biedrins; forwards Stephen Jackson, Corey Maggette, Anthony Randolph, Brandan Wright, Ronny Turiaf.

Golden State Warriors Key Additions: Guard Speedy Claxton (trade from Hawks), guard Acie Law (trade from Hawks), forward Devean George (trade from Raptors), guard Stephen Curry (draft), center Mikki Moore (free agent).

Golden State Warriors Key Subtractions: Forward Marco Belinelli (traded to Raptors), guard Jamal Crawford (traded to Hawks), center Rob Kurz (signed with Cavaliers).

2009-2010 Golden State Warriors Point Guards:

Ellis will be the one of the keys to the Warriors’ success. He was elevated to point guard after Baron Davis signed with the Los Angeles Clippers last summer, but an accident while riding a moped – and the following team-imposed suspension – kept him off the court until Jan. 23. Ellis was miffed about the suspension and loss of pay, and then left the team for seven games in February because of what was officially called family issues, but insiders said he was still unhappy.

Ellis averaged 19 points a game, but his shooting percentage (45.1 percent) was a significant drop compared to the 2007-08 season (53.1 percent) when he averaged 20.2 points a game. Speculation during the summer focused on the disconnect between Ellis and management and Ellis wanted out. Ellis has since denied that accusation and indicated that he’s ready to go.

Acie Law, acquired from Atlanta in a trade for Crawford, will be given a chance to win the backup position. Law, the 11th overall pick in the 2007 draft, never did find minutes behind Mike Bibby and Joe Johnson in Atlanta and was a huge disappointment. He averaged just 10.2 minutes and 2.9 points a game last season. If Law disappoints again, Speedy Claxton, also from Atlanta, might fill the void if he can avoid injuries.

2009-2010 Golden State Warriors Off Guards:

Jackson talks a great game about leadership, but he really didn’t play and act like a leader last season. He and Nelson engaged in a public spat, and he implied that it was his teammates’ fault for the team’s problems last season. Maybe with a year of experience as one of the leaders, perhaps the 31-year- old Jackson, the oldest member of the team, will possess a better understanding of how a leader is supposed to carry himself. In terms of production, Jackson averaged career-highs in points (20.7), rebounds (5.1), assists (6.5) and shooting percentage (41.4 percent) last season.

It’s questionable that Jackson, particularly at his age, will be able to duplicate last season’s lofty numbers. Nelson loves rookie Stephen Curry, and it’s a safe bet that the coach will make sure Curry receives considerable playing time.

Curry may have to play at point guard to give time to Anthony Morrow. The second-year player came our of nowhere to score 62 points during a two-game stretch in November and despite an on and off-again philosophical clashes with Nelson, finished the season as the league’s most accurate three-point shooter.

2009-2010 Golden State Warriors Small Forwards:

By the time last season ended, Corey Maggette’s reputation for selfishness was on full display. Maggette is great at slashing to the basket and getting to the foul line, but he’s never spends a lot of time looking to pass the basketball. Maggette averaged 1.8 assists a game last season, his lowest since his second season in the league, and for a team that depends on ball movement and speed, Maggette’s style is deadly for the Warriors.

2009-2010 Golden State Warriors Power Forwards:

Anthony Randolph is a reason for optimism for Golden State fans. The 6-10 second-player finished the season scoring in double figures in 10 of his final 11 games. Randolph also produced a doubledouble in five of his last 10 games of the season. Look for him to be more involved in the offense this season.

2009-2010 Golden State Warriors Centers:

No Golden State player takes better advantage of the Warriors’ system than Andris Biedrins. The lanky Biedrins is faster and quicker than most power forwards and centers, allowing him to grab rebounds and score garbage points (11.9). He could be more effective if he got the ball more often. Biedrins’ scoring decreased each month last year, but not because of his effort. It was more due to teammates’ failure to get him the ball.

Ronny Turiaf is the team’s emotional catalyst and fiery bench motivator. But Turiaf also plays solid defense, a lost art for the majority of the players on the roster. Turiaf really shined when Biedrins was injured, showing a nice offensive game and the ability to block shots and rebound.
