New Jersey Nets 2009-2010 Preview & Prediction

They are set up for 2010. Now find someone who wants to join the mess. They have solid basketball management, a good head coach, some young exciting talent. But the Nets have ownership that was voted the second worst in all pro-sports in one poll, mounting financial losses and an antiquated arena. Oh, and last season’s best player is in Orlando. The coaches, president and GM all are in their last contract year. Cutbacks hit everywhere and the office workforce is down 25 percent. The poor cousins in the area to the Knicks, they insist Brooklyn is in the future, but the whole move has been a long running soap opera.

New Jersey Nets Coach: Lawrence Frank (7th season)

New Jersey Nets Returning Players: Centers Josh Boone, Brook Lopez; guards Keyon Dooling, Devin Harris; forwards Chris Douglas-Roberts, Trenton Hassell, Jarvis Hayes, Eduardo Najera, Bobby Simmons, Sean Williams, Yi Jianlian.

New Jersey Nets Key Additions: Guard Rafer Alston (trade from Magic), forward Tony Battie (trade from Magic), guard Courtney Lee (trade from Magic), guard Terrence Williams (draft).

New Jersey Nets Key Subtractions: Guard Vince Carter (traded to Magic), forward Maurice Ager (signed to play in Spain).

2009-2010 New Jersey Nets Point Guards:

Devin Harris is the team leader in scoring and passing. He now must also be the team leader, period.

Harris, in his first full Nets season, opened eyes with his penetration and scoring in 2008-09. He was a blur. But he was also injured a lot (missed 13 games) with an assortment of illnesses attributed to his takea-hit style. He established career highs in scoring, rebounding, assists and steals. Yet the Nets need more this season. He has to get everybody going. And he must defend. With so much on his offensive plate, his defense suffered.

Behind him, the Nets have superb depth. There’s veteran Rafer Alston, a terrific distributor who insists there is no problem coming from NBA finalist Orlando to be a backup. He becomes the third point guard the Nets sought. Keyon Dooling, who’ll also see time at 2, is a very good quality combo guard.

2009-2010 New Jersey Nets Off Guards:

They lost more than Vince Carter’s scoring in the draft night trade. They also lost his passing, his rebounding and his leadership. But in addition to cap space, they feel they gained a lot in Courtney Lee. They get youth, quickness, athleticism, defense. Lee (8.4 ppg, 2.3 rpg) was the fourth option as a starter for the Magic in the NBA Finals. He’ll bring all the athletic and energizer goodies and promises to get over the shock and hurt of a trade from a title contender

Behind Lee, the Nets have Keyon Dooling (9.7 ppg, 3.5 apg), a smart heady vet who defends and was at his best last season starting at the 2. He’s a backup point, as well. Chris Douglas-Roberts, is his second year,
showed good summer improvement on his shot and handle and is one of the Nets’ corps of athletic wings.

2009-2010 New Jersey Nets Small Forwards:

The position should be split initially between vets Bobby Simmons, the Nets’ best 3-point shooter (.447), and Jarvis Hayes (8.7 ppg), the most reliable bench player last season. Simmons had the job at the beginning and pretty much ended playing the 4 by season’s end. The Nets like Hayes’ stretch-the-defense-ability. He did a little bit of everything and played through a painful thumb injury trying to keep the Nets in the playoff hum the final month.

There will be a new, important face in the equation: rookie wing Terrence Williams who wowed the Nets with his versatility, defense and exceptional passing skills. In keeping with Nets tradition, though, his shooting needs work.

Reliable plug-in Trenton Hassell, one of the expiring contract guys, brings his team-aboveall mentality along with defense off the bench. Douglas-Roberts can also go here in a pinch.

2009-2010 New Jersey Nets Power Forwards:

Yi Jianlian (8.6 ppg, 5.3 rpg) is the returning starter. He flashed promise last season, then broke his pinkie in January, returned but never regained any traction. This season is huge for him.

Yi, who can shoot and is a willing, if not capable, defender. He went on a weight program, hoping to gain some obvious needed bulk. He is a critical piece and the Nets need production, period.

Behind Yi, the Nets have Tony Battie, who’ll also back up at center. Then there is Eduardo Najera, who bombed in his first Net year because of injuries. He can bring toughness and defense. Simmons also gets inserted here frequently when the Nets go small.

2009-2010 New Jersey Nets Centers:

The Nets are solid here. In Brook Lopez (13.0 ppg, 8.1 rpg, 1.84 bpg), the Nets have a low post center who proved to be the steal of the 2008 draft (No. 10). Blessed with good hands and working with Harris, he is always a pick and roll threat. As the season progressed, he became more of a force inside – and not just on his dives to the rim. And he can step our and hit a mid-range shot. Now, he must improve the overall defense.

In veteran four-five man Tony Battie (6.5 ppg, 3.6 rpg), the Nets secured a been there, done-that guy in the Carter trade, a rotation player. Battie has a post-up game and also is a good catch and shoot type. He’s a good post defender. He’ll help – if he avoids his injury history.

Josh Boone (4.2 ppg, 4.2 rpg) began last season as the starting center but lost to job to Lopez during a injury absence and never regained it. Sean Williams, another 4-5 with enormous athleticism, must first stick on the roster and regain team trust after some offcourt disasters.
