New York Knicks 2009-2010 Preview & Prediction

It is not a throwaway year by any means. The Knicks want to be competitive this year; they want to please their fans this year. But really, it’s next year that they have geared for with cap maneuvering. They’ll have more than $20 million to spend in the free agent marketplace. This past summer was about trying to bring in big names (Jason Kidd and Grant Hill) that might attract more big names, but they were rebuffed. Still, they are New York’s team with a fan base that wants nothing more than to unleash its support.

New York Knicks Coach: Mike D’Antoni (2nd season)

New York Knicks Returning Players: Forwards Wilson Chandler, Danilo Gallinari, Al Harrington, Jared Jeffries, David Lee; guards Chris Duhon, Larry Hughes, Nate Robinson; center Eddy Curry.

New York Knicks Key Additions: Guard Toney Douglas (draft), forward Jordan Hill (draft), center Darko Milicic (trade from Grizzlies).

New York Knicks Key Subtractions: Guard Quentin Richardson (trade to Grizzlies), forward Chris Wilcox (signed with Pistons).

2009-2010 New York Knicks Point Guards:

D’Antoni wanted no part of Marbury last season so the Knicks fetched Chris Duhon, who delivered more than expected. But Duhon logged over 700 minutes more than his highest previous total and simply wore down with an ailing back.

Duhon averaged 7.2 assists (10th in the NBA) and a career high 11.1 points, but Knick offensive numbers were inflated with the awful team-wide defense. So the Knicks have sought a true starter to implement D’Antoni’s style. Over the summer, they flirted with Jason Kidd, Andre Miller, Jamaal Tinsley, Ramon Sessions and Jason Williams.

Beyond Duhon is free agent Nate Robinson, the 5-9, two-time slam dunk champ who can be a full court press but whose scorer’s mentality is better suited at off guard. Rookie Toney Douglas is third on the depth chart.

2009-2010 New York Knicks Off Guards:

Wilson Chandler (14.4 ppg, 5.4 rpg) was a complete revelation in his second season, his talent level is really off the charts. The athletic Chandler looms as a future piece at one of the few Knick positions where defense appears. The shot needs work, but he can score and he can defend. And in small lineups, be bumped up to the three. Larry Hughes, a 14.6 scorer over 11 seasons, is on his fourth team in five years. He’ll score. He’ll defend. He’ll likely be gone after the season with one year left. The Knicks traded to get combo guard Toney Douglas late in the first round. He scored (21.5 ppg) and defended (ACC Defensive Player of the Year) at Florida State. The Knicks pray he’ll do the same. They also have Joe Crawford, the player from the D-League.

2009-2010 New York Knicks Small Forwards:

Danilo Gallinari, whose rookie season was severely limited by a back injury that required minor surgery, is another futures piece. AI Harrington, who averaged 20.1 points on the year that starred at Golden State, gives the Knicks scoring and experience. But Harrington twice cost victories when he hung on the rim – both times against the Clippers – in the closing seconds of regulation and the Knicks lost in overtime.

The feeling is Gallinari is better than he showed in limited time. But even in just 28 games, he showed he can shoot. And he displayed an utterly fearless streak New Yorkers will love. He’ll rebound and try to defend – still more than most Knicks.

Harrington has one year left. He’s probably a No.3 option, although he plays like a first. But he can score in bunches.

2009-2010 New York Knicks Power Forwards:

You would think the power forward position would give the Knicks the most comfort. Not quite – despite the NBA leader in double-doubles, David Lee, and a 6-11 defender, Jared Jeffries, who can cover three positions.

The free agent Lee (16.0 ppg, 11.7 rpg) can rebound, can’t defend. Jeffries (5.3 ppg) can defend, can’t score. Jeffries has two years left and is a role player who just never fit. Lee averages double figures but his offense needs work. And that was why he was dancing throughout the summer searching for a multi-year offer from the Knicks who wanted a one-year pact.

And from the draft, they got Jordan Hill, a 6-10 big from Arizona who needs to bulk up. He was the fall-back choice when Stephen Curry and Ricky Rubio went off the board. He became the insurance against losing Lee.

2009-2010 New York Knicks Centers:

This is an intriguing position for the Knicks because they have two guys, Eddy Curry and Darko Milicic, once viewed as potential studs, but who have very little to show for it. Curry last season played 12 minutes total (knee problems). Milicic was drafted No.2 overall in 2003. This is his fourth team.

Curry, trying to get back in shape, arrived at summer league without his sneakers. So really, the Knicks don’t know what they have. If Curry is in shape and motivated, he can be a low post force, a scorer and rebounder. He averaged 19.5 points and 7.0 rebounds two seasons ago when he was spoken of in All-Star terms. If he shows dedication, he could be a trade chip at worst.

Milicic may have finally found a system that fits his game. After compiling career marks of 5.5 points and 4.0 rebounds in 17.2 minutes while toiling in Detroit, Orlando and Memphis. Milicic cost the Knicks Quentin Richardson. It was a high reward, low-risk gamble on the 7-0 center. If he flops, so what? He comes off the books after the year. The rating here could be much higher if the stars align.
