Philadelphia 76ers 2009-2010 Preview & Prediction

It’s going to be important for Lou Williams to make a smooth transition from shooting to point guard. If he’s able to move the ball, hit the open man and limit his turnovers, he should be fine. Jordan should give him, as well as Holiday, a lot of playing time during the preseason to get adjusted (Q the new role.

Kapono appears to be a nice upgrade in regards to shooting. He’s a great 3-point shooter, which is something the Sixers have needed over the last two seasons.

Iguodala and Young are on the verge of being big time players. If one or both of them could make the All-Star team if they get off to a good start. More importantly, if they play well, the Sixers have a chance to get back to the postseason.

Dalernbert could be the final piece in determining how far the Sixers can go. The team could use a breakout year from him.

Philadelphia 76ers Coach: Eddie Jordan (1st season)

Philadelphia 76ers Returning Players: Forwards Elton Brand, Andre Iguodala, Jason Smith, Marreese Speights, Thaddeus Young; center Samuel Dalembert; guards Willie Green, Royal Ivey, Lou Williams.

Philadelphia 76ers Key Additions: Center Primoz Brezec (free agent), forward Rodney Carney (free agent), guard Jrue Holiday (draft), forward Jason Kapono (trade from Raptors).

Philadelphia 76ers Key Subtractions: Forward Reggie Evans (traded to Raptors), forward Donyell Marshall (free agent), guard Andre Miller (signed with Trail Blazers), center Theo Ratliff (signed with Spurs), guard Kareem Rush (signed with Clippers).

2009-2010 Philadelphia 76ers Point Guards:

Williams was instant offense off the bench. The 6-2 guard would come in the game and look for his shot. He averaged 12.8 points a game. Williams has always been a scorer throughout his career.

Now things have to change. Williams will be in charge of getting the ball to his teammates in good shooting position. He won’t be responsible for creating his own shot. With that in mind, he has the ability to penetrate and knock down the open shot.

Holiday will receive some playing time. He did play some point guard in the summer league. But Jordan will have to bring him along slowly. He only played one season of college basketball. The former UCLA star has great quickness. He should be a defensive presence on the floor.

2009-2010 Philadelphia 76ers Off Guards:

Willie Green has to score more than 8.5 points a game as the team’s shooting guard. Green should get more shots in Jordan’s new offense. This should help him become a little more aggressive offensively.

Williams could move to shooting guard during the course of the game. Holiday could relieve him of some of the ballhandling chores. At that point, Williams would be playing his natural position.

In addition, Iguodala could give the Sixers some quality minutes in the backcourt. He’s really improved his outside shooting.

Jason Kapono is another option. Kapono was acquired in a trade during the offseason when the Sixers dealt power forward Reggie Evans to Toronto for him. The 6-5 forward is a terrific outside shooter. He shot 43.2 percent from the field. He can also shoot the three.

2009-2010 Philadelphia 76ers Small Forwards:

Iguodala has really thrived in this Spot. He creates a lot of matchup problems for players around the league. Iguodala led the team in scoring (15.5 ppg). The 6-6 forward is one of the most versatile players on the team. Iguodala has improved his game each year. His biggest improvement has been his ability to knock down the perimeter shot. He could always dunk and take the ball to the basket.

Kapono gives the Sixers some depth at small forward. He averaged 8.2 points
a game for the Raptors last year. But what Kapono gives them is a consistent outside shooter. He fills that need.

2009-2010 Philadelphia 76ers Power Forwards:

Thaddeus Young is one of the rising stars in the NBA. Young runs the floor extremely well. The 6-5 forward has some great moves in the open court. In spite of his success, Young is probably more suited to playing small forward. Nevertheless, he uses his quickness against the bigger players.

Marreese Speights was a solid contributor. Speights, a 6-10 power forward, had a nice rookie year. He averaged 7.7 points and 3.7 rebounds a game. Speights is a strong post player. He can rebound, play defense and fill the lanes on the break. He averaged 16.0 minutes a game. His playing time should increase this season.

Brand will be a key player for the Sixers. He’s coming off an injury to his shoulder. He is not a low post player. He plays better facing the basket. He’s a good passer. He can hit the 15-footer. He doesn’t have a lot of foot speed. He can be a trailer on the break. Once again, he should be able to fit into the team’s new offense. Prior to the injury, he averaged 13.5 points and 5.8 rebounds a game. If he recovers well from the injury, Brand could make a big difference.

Jason Smith is another player coming back from an injury. Smith missed all of last season with surgery on his left knee. He averaged 4.5 points and 3.5 rebounds a game his rookie year. Smith has a good midrange game. He’s a good shooter from 10 to 12 feet away from the basket.

2009-2010 Philadelphia 76ers Centers:

Samuel Dalembert has to become a dominant player in the middle. Dalembert needs to embellish his game offensively. The 6-10 center doesn’t have a lot of moves inside. If he can score on a consistent basis, he would be able to command double team coverage. This would allow for easier shots on the perimeter.

It’s going to be interesting to see how Jordan uses him in the new offense. With good ball movement, he could get some good shots in the lane. Dalembert averaged 6.4 points, 8.5 rebounds and 1.7S blocks a game. The Sixers could get some more scoring from him.

Speights demonstrated his ability to play some minutes at center. He gives the Sixers some flexibility at this spot. Speights plays the game with a lot of strength and power. He does a great job of crashing the boards. He can pull the other team’s big man away from the basket with his shooting. In August, Philly signed Primoz Brezec, the journeyman who has returned to the NBA after spending time in Europe last season.
