2010-2011 Arizona Season Preview

There is almost no time for a college basketball coach to be satisfied. But secondyear Arizona coach Sean Miller can take comfort in a sense of stability, something lacking around the program when the Wildcats had interim coaches in back-to-back seasons. The backwash from Lute Olson’s two-year, health-related departure from the scene caught up to the program last season. The Wildcats were young, and the few veterans who were around might as well have been starting over too, adjusting to another coach and more schematic changes on offense and defense. Miller directed the team to a 16-15 record, as the Wildcats missed all of the postseason tournaments, ending a run of 25 consecutive years in which Arizona played in the NCAA Tournament. Miller was just setting the foundation, though. Arizona returns all but one key player – point guard Nic Wise – with significant improvement expected from everyone in the second year of the coach’s system.

Arizona Backcourt

The team’s main concern is point guard, with sophomore Lamont “MoMo” Jones taking over for Wise. Jones is a confident kid from Harlem who matured as much as any Wildcat over the second half of last season. Like Wise, Jones can be a playmaking point guard – with his 17-foot game-winning runner at Stanford serving as Exhibit A – but he’ll need to learn when to take things slower, too, and become a leader for a program with only one senior. His backup will be freshman combo guard Jordin Mayes. Arizona can’t afford an injury here. Kyle Fogg returns as the starting shooting guard, and he rarely tries to do anything beyond his skill set. He’s not dynamic with the ball, but he’ll make defenses pay for leaving him open he’s 71 of 175, 40.6 percent, on 3-pointers in his first two seasons. Fogg is a willing defender who spent the offseason getting bigger in order to play the physical style Miller demands. Freshman Daniel Bejarano should add some shooting touch, as could junior Brendon Lavender, whose prowess in practice didn’t always carry over to games last season.

Arizona Frontcourt

Arizona has many multiple pieces, starting with post Derrick Williams, last season’s Pac-lO Freshman of the Year. He often had to play the center spot, where his lack of size was a liability on defense, but his footwork and creativity gave opposing big men trouble on the other end of the floor. Arizona’s hope for a true center is sophomore Kyryl Natyazhko, who is coming off an excellent summer playing with the Ukranian team at the under-20 European Championships. At the wing positions, junior college transfer Jesse Perry will challenge enigmatic senior J amelle Horne, whose inconsistency has baffled three Arizona head coaches. He turned into an effective 3-point shooter last season, and has the leaping ability to be the effective rebounder Miller needs him to be. Sophomores Solomon Hill and Kevin Parrom are options at the forward positions, giving Miller lots of possibilities with big and small lineups.

2010-2011 Arizona Predictions

Arizona should be ready to soar in Miller’s second season He’s establishing two traits sorely missing at UA in recent years – toughness and work ethic – just as he did at Xavier, while having access to a higher quality of recruit. Expect another long NCAA Tournament streak to begin this season

Arizona Finish in the PAC-10: 2nd
