2009-2010 Arizona State Season Preview

Arizona State had one of its best teams in a quarter century last season, and now coach Herb Sendek will try to defy the laws of physics – what goes up, must come down.

The Sun Devils lose their two best players – guard James Harden (the third overall pick in the NBA Draft) and steadfast senior post Jeff Pendergraph – who combined to take 44 percent of the team’s shots and score nearly half of its points last season.

Three other starters and the top three bench players return. Question is: Are there any lead dogs among that pack? Five incoming freshmen also join the fray as ASU looks for star power and its third consecutive 20-win season.

Arizona State Backcourt

It almost sounds like a knock: Senior point guard Derek Glasser is ‘steady.’ There are, of course, worse things to be than rock solid, and Glasser showed last season he can be more than just a floor leader even while leading the league in turnover-to-assist ratio (2.2-to-l ).

Glasser played an increasing shooting and scoring role as the season progressed, and when opponents desperately tried to take away Harden and Pendergraph late in games, Glasser could hammer the nail. He hit clutch 3-pointers to beat UCLA and Arizona.

He spent the previous two off seasons coming back from injury, but there were no such problems this summer when he worked tirelessly on his outside shot, Glasser hit 41.3 percent last season, but likely will have a hand in his face more this season.

Jamelle McMillan has shared time at the point with Glasser and can also play alongside him. Ty Abbott, so clutch as a freshman, struggled with his shot for much of his sophomore season before finishing with a flourish. He averaged 10.8 points in the final six games, hitting 16 of 28 3-point shots.

ASU again figures to go with a three guard lineup and lean on its outside scoring punch after setting school records for most 3-point baskets (288) and attempts (778). The coaching staff knows what senior Jerren Shipp can do, but freshmen such as Demetrius Walker and Trent Lockett have intriguing upside.

Arizona State Frontcourt

Center Eric Boateng has been about a 10-minute per game reserve in two seasons since transferring from Duke. Sendek sees continued improvement from the former McDonald’s All-American, who has to show he’s worthy of the expanded playing time.

Russian freshman Ruslan Pateev, who played at an American prep school last season, has the size and strength to help right away in the middle.

Junior forward Rihards Kuksiks is ASU’s only returning double-figure scorer, and he just eked past that mark at 10.3 points per game. The 6-6 wing does almost all his damage from behind the arc – 210 of his 267 shots last season were 3-point attempts. He was eighth nationally, converting 44.3 percent from long range.

As with the rest of the Devils, the question is whether or not those kind of good looks will be available this season.

Victor Rudd, a 6-7 freshman, is a talented addition to the frontcourt, capable of hitting from the outside and creating plenty of college highlight dunks as he did in high school. He has the athleticism to contribute right away, although his senior suspension from powerhouse Findlay Prep in Henderson, Nev., raised some red flags.

2009-2010 Arizona State Predictions

Arizona State will have a deeper and overall more athletic team than last season, but it’s too big of a leap of faith to think Sendek can replicate the past two seasons without Harden and Pendergraph.

Still, he’s the kind of coach who doesn’t need all-star talent to be successful. The Sun Devils will still be a wild card – and a tough out in the Pac-10, because their patient offense and smothering defense will keep games close. ASU’s season averages for points allowed under Sendek: 61.8, 61.9 and 60.5 last year.

Now, if the Devils can only find a go-to scorer …. Arizona State Finish in the PAC-10: 8th
