2010-2011 Arkansas Season Preview

Despite battling numerous injuries and then the aggravation of having to suspend leading scorer Courtney Fortson for 14 games a year ago, Arkansas coach John Pelphrey starts anew in 2010-11. In addition to the off-court distractions early in the year, Arkansas recorded home losses to Morgan State, East Tennessee State and South Alabama in its first six games. The Razorbacks peaked at midseason by winning six of seven SEC games, but the Hogs then lost their final six conference outings to finish 14-18 overall Defensively, the Razorbacks struggled on the perimeter as well as in the paint, but Marshawn Powell’s career took off. After Michael Sanchez was injured, no one on the team elevated their game more so than Powell and fellow big Mike Washington. Arkansas struggled with its perimeter ballhandling all season long, but much of that had to do with Fortson’s suspension and a lack of stability at the point guard position. Fortson missed 14 games yet had more turnovers than any other Razorback.

Arkansas Backcourt

Marcus Britt and Rotnei Clarke should comprise a steadier backcourt this season. Britt is a defensive stopper, while Clarke’s 3-point skill can provide instant offense on any given night. Julysses Nobles will also be a huge key on the perimeter. He started 14 games and had 74 assists versus 49 turnovers in 18.3 minutes per game. Clarke, who squashed transfer rumors in May, hit 100 3-pointers a year ago. He had 13 against Alcorn State and 10 against East Tennessee State. His marksmanship made him public enemy No.1 in every Razorback opponents’ game plan. Pelphrey added depth with the additions of freshmen Mardracus Wade and Rickey Scott. He likes both players’ commitment to defending, as well as their skill set on offense. Both are scorers, although Wade may be a better passer.

Arkansas Frontcourt

Arkansas has its meal ticket up front in sophomore Powell, the team’s leading rebounder a year ago. Powell has polished moves in the paint and shot 50 percent from the floor while taking more field goal attempts than any other player. Other than Washington and Powell, the Razorbacks had to be aghast at the lack of depth in the post a season ago. Sanchez would’ve been set to contribute, but he played in only four games after being injured for nearly the entire season. Pelphrey has a pair of forwards in Delvon Johnson and Glenn Bryant who should be able to elevate their games and provide some complementary company for Powell. Marvell Waithe, a versatile incoming junior, is a 6-9 forward who is a good shooter and a quality ball-handler. Accruing depth in the post will be a must as the Razorbacks were outrebounded by 2.6 boards per game last season.

2010-2011 Arkansas Predictions

Starting over without distractions will be welcome for Pelphrey. The key will be the development of depth on the inside plus valuing the basketball on the perimeter. Britt, Nobles, and Clarke should hold down the backcourt, while Powell could make a name for himself nationally with his multifaceted talents. Arkansas Finish in the SEC: 4th in West Division
