2010-2011 Auburn Season Preview

It’s a new era in Auburn basketball as former UTEP coach Tony Barbee inherits a stellar recruiting class, that he later added to, and presides over the opening of the brand new Auburn Arena in November. The state-of-the-art facility will not have the largest capacity in the nation, but with the proximity of the crowd to the court, the Tigers should have a definite home-court advantage. The technology, perks and amenities it offers will allow Auburn recruits to play in a modern arena with 21st-century features. With a new facility comes heightened expectations, though probably not this year considering Auburn lost four senior starters. Unfortunately, those low expectations dropped even more when Frankie Sullivan, the team’s only experienced returnee, suffered a severe left knee injury during the summer, requiring surgery. He was Auburn’s fourthleading scorer a year ago and is among the SEC’s top defensive guards. Equally important, he would provide leadership to the abundance of talented freshmen and sophomores. Now those contributions are in doubt. Auburn allowed 47.6-percent shooting from the floor in SEC play and was outrebounded by nearly three boards per game. Barbee’s work is cut out for him in tightening defensively.

Auburn Backcourt

So much had been built around Sullivan. Last season, he scored in double figures 22 times, including 27 against Florida in the SEC Tournament. But, Auburn lost three seniors each of whom averaged over 12 points per game, so he was expected to contribute more offensively. He is already an established defensive star, finishing second in the SEC with 1.9 steals per game. There is no timetable for Sullivan’s return, and if his recovery is slow, he is still eligible for a redshirt year. So, Barbee faces a monumental challenge trying to piece together his perimeter game. Sophomore Earnest Ross saw the most playing time, but he averaged only 13-4 minutes. Andre Malone and Tony Neysmith return and should see more court time. Only one SEC team took more 3-point shots than Auburn last season. Barbee has not said whether emphasis on the triple would change.

Auburn Frontcourt

In the post, versatile Kenny Gabriel could be the best bet among returnees to have an impact due to the excellent range on his jump shot. Incoming freshmen Luke Cothran and Josh Langford are expected to have an immediate impact. Cothran was rated as a four-star power forward by Rivals.com, while the 6-6 Langford was the top player in Alabama last season. Incoming transfer Adrian Forbes could make a difference with his 6-8, 230-pound frame.

2010-2011 Auburn Predictions

Rebounding, porous defense and inexperience – there are no seniors on the roster are areas in which the Tigers must improve. Will any of last season’s newcomers step up or will the heralded recruiting class take over quickly? And, who can fill Sullivan’s shoes if he is not available? Auburn Finish in the SEC: 6th in West Division
