2010-2011 Baylor Season Preview

Baylor’s rise from the ashes is starting to reach unprecedented heights. Eight years after the Bears almost received the NCAA death penalty for infractions committed on the watch of former coach Dave Bliss, Baylor continues to thrive under Scott Drew. The Bears are coming off a season in which they won a school-record 28 games, and came within a win of reaching the Final Four for the first time since 1950, when the NCAA Tournament involved just eight teams. Two starters – including dynamic guard LaceDarius Dunn – are back, as are six other lettermen. Drew’s latest recruiting class was ranked 17th nationally and is headlined by 6-11 Perry Jones, a consensus Top-10 recruit.

Baylor Backcourt

Dunn’s return gives Baylor a sterling performer capable of taking over any game. He’s the best player in the Big 12 at making something of nothing – burying difficult shots at critical moments. Dunn will have to adjust to life without Tweety Carter, who came to Baylor known as a prolific scorer and developed into an allaround performer capable of running Drew’s offense with precision. Carter averaged 15 points and almost six assists per game, and Drew will look to A.J. Walton, who showed well as a freshman, to take on some of the responsibilities Carter handled so well. The Bears need Nolan Dennis to step up after he struggled in adjusting to the college game, and will also look to incoming freshmen Bakari Turner and Stargell Love for help.

Baylor Frontcourt

Ekpe Udoh made the most of his only season in Waco, emerging as an overwhelming inside force in anchoring the Bears’ 2-3 zone defense. A transfer from Michigan, Udoh averaged almost a double-double per night in addition to leading the conference in blocked shots. Baylor fans would have loved to have seen Udoh return for his senior season, but he will play for Golden State this season after coming out early. The Warriors used the No.6 pick in the NBA Draft to get him. The Bears also lost 7-0 center Josh Lomers, but return Quincy Acy and Anthony Jones. Each is capable of breaking out this season, but the Bears’ fortunes could hinge heavily on whether Perry Jones is as good as advertised.

2010-2011 Baylor Predictions

A year ago, Baylor was picked to finish near the bottom of the standings, but the team now finds itself picked as a championship contender. Drew knows it won’t be easy to duplicate last season’s success, and it has nothing to do with the athletic talent his team lost. Baylor Finish in the Big 12: 2nd
