2009-2010 Boise State Season Preview

The Broncos were big on scoring and light on defense last season, ranking second in the conference in the former and eighth in the latter.

That is why there is good news and bad news entering the 2009-10 campaign. The good is that four of the team’s top-five scorers are back. The bad is that leading scorer Mark Sanchez and his 13 points per game are gone.

Boise State will need to find somebody to make up for that lack of scoring and perhaps tighten its defense along the way.

There is some good news on the defensive front, however. Even on a team that allowed 72.3 points per game last season, forward Ike Okoye and guard Anthony Thomas were able to garner a place on the conference’s all-defensive team.

Okoye split time as a starter with Kurt Cunningham, but chances are the pair will see more time on the court together this season. The 6-9 Cunningham came on strong as a junior last season, finishing second on the team in scoring while converting 67 percent of his field goal attempts – by far the best rate in the WAC.

Okoye and Cunningham will be joined by transfer Daequon Montreal on what the Broncos think will be a tough front line. Montreal filled up the stat sheet at nearby College of Southern Idaho, averaging 15.9 points and 8.9 rebounds, while grabbing 23 steals and swatting 27 shots.

Thomas is back running the point after he put together a strong junior year in which he scored 9.5 points per game and issued a school single-season record 151 assists. A senior-laden rotation can only help, and if BSU can get its act together defensively, it might be OK in a competitive conference.
