2010-2011 Bradley Season Preview

Bradley fans looking for an encouraging sign should take note of the return of Sam Maniscalco, Andrew Warren and Taylor Brown. They were the Braves’ top three scorers last season. The last time Bradley returned its top three scorers was in 2005-06. That season ended with the Braves’ appearance in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. That also marked the Braves’ last trip to the Big Dance. They made postseason appearances in 2007 (National Invitation Tournament), 2008 (College Basketball Invitational) and 2009 (CollegeInsider.com Tournament). Although they probably could have extended that string last season, the Braves decided to forego playing in the postseason following an upand- down 16-15 season. Four starters return – Maniscalco, Warren, Brown and 6-9 center-forward Will Egolf. Also back is guard Dodie Dunson, a part-time starter in 2008-09 who redshirted last season after breaking his forearm in Bradley’s second game. Dunson averaged 10.1 points while starting 19 of 35 games during the 2008-09 season. He will add firepower to an offense that features the Missouri Valley’s top-scoring trio of Warren, Maniscalco and Brown. Warren returned after missing the 2008-09 season with an injury to lead the Braves in scoring and 3-point shooting (61 baskets, 39.6 percent). Brown, the team’s leading rebounder at 6.9, averaged 13.5 points per game, while Maniscalco averaged 13.1 points per game. He also is the league’s active leader with 329 assists and is third with 105 career steals. Scoring points shouldn’t be a problem, but the Braves will need to tighten their defense and rebounding. The Braves ranked first in the league in 3-point field-goal percentage defense and second in field-goal percentage defense, but they allowed 67-4 points to rank sixth and gave up too many offensive rebounds. Bradley was in the bottom half in the league in rebounding, getting out-boarded by an average of 2.0 per game to finish eighth. The Braves are hoping 6-8 redshirt freshman Jordan Prosser and 6-10 freshman Andrew Davis provide some assistance in that area.
