2009-2010 BYU Season Preview

Basketball became secondary at BYU in early June, when coach Dave Rose fell ill visiting family in Las Vegas and required emergency surgery. He was diagnosed with a rare form of pancreatic cancer.

As ominous as that sounded, Rose was upbeat because it was slow moving and caught early. Associate head coach Dave Rice said Rose "looked great" when he saw his boss upon his return from Las Vegas.

Rose has been a source of strength with his positive attitude and steel spine, and at press time he vowed to coach the team this entire season.

BYU Backcourt

The Cougars have plenty of reasons to be upbeat, too, even after losing the multi-talented Lee Curnmard. The main reason for such optimism is Jimmer Fredette, the junior guard who is a star of the league.

Fredette is the conference’s top returning scorer, at 16.2 points a game, and his assists average of 4.1 is second.

Fredette’s backcourr sidekick is junior Jackson Emery, an all-league defender who does just about everything. He recorded an assists-toturnovers ratio of nearly 3-1 last season.

BYU Frontcourt

The perimeter complement to Fredette and Emery is senior swingman and Brazilian national team player Jonathan Tavernari. Rice and the rest of Rose’s staff have been refining Tavernari’s sometimes-wild shot selection.

Tavernari shot 38 percent from long distance in the past two seasons. At 15.7 points, he’s the second-highest returning scorer in the league. What impressed the BYU staff was his 7.2 rebound average, fourth in the conference.

The BYU brass is counting on a deeper roster, allowing Tavernari to get more rest, which will make him even more dangerous.

Charles Abouo, because he’s a sophomore, might have an edge to claim Curnmard’s small forward starting position, but Rice expects newcomer Tyler Haws, who nearly picked Stanford over BYU, to compete for the role.

Abouo’s 10 points and five rebounds against Wake Forest last season showed promise. He also hit double digits in scoring, with 11 points, against Colorado State.

2009-2010 BYU Predictions

As buoyant as the Cougars’ hierarchy might have sounded in the summer about the season, their thoughts and prayers were with Rose.
