2010-2011 BYU Season Preview

The only way Brigham Young might add any more mileage this season is scheduling a tournament in Hawaii. Without leaving the mainland, the Cougars will span one end of the country to the other in December. First, there’s a trip to All-America guard Jimmer Fredette’s hometown of Glens Falls, N.Y., to play Vermont. Less than two weeks later, the Cougars go to Anaheim to face UCLA in the John Wooden Classic. It’s a particular honor, given this is the first Wooden Classic since the passing of the legendary coach. That will be extra attention on a program coming off four 20-plus win seasons and as many consecutive NCAA tournaments. By the time the travel-tested Cougars enter the Mountain West fray, they should be ready for another title hunt.

BYU Backcourt

There aren’t many, if any, senior backcourt tandems in the country with the credentials of Fredette and Jackson Emery. Fredette was seventh nationally in scoring last season at 22.1 points per game, a six-point improvement over his all-conference sophomore season. He was only too happy to share, with 4.7 assists per game. Despite drawing attention outside, he still knocked down 44 percent from behind the arc. He was largely responsible for BYU ranking second nationally in scoring (83.1) and leading the nation in free-throw percentage (79.0). On any other team, Emery would claim go-to status. He took second-team All-MWC honors, averaging 12.5 points and distracting opponents from Fredette. Still, it’s Fredette’s club, and everybody knows it.

BYU Frontcourt

BYU rarely has a talent void up front, but Rose must do some rebuilding. Chris Miles, one of the few true centers in the Mountain West, graduated. Four-year mainstay wing Jonathan Tavernari, who voluntarily took on a role off the bench and earned the league’s sixth-man award, also is gone. After a bonus of getting Fredette back another year when he withdrew his name from the NBA Draft, Rose couldn’t spend much time lamenting graduation, transfers and mission losses. He is excited by some of the unknowns and predicts a team different from the BYU mold of inside strength at the expense of the quickness needed to match some of the MWC’s smaller teams.

2010-2011 BYU Predictions

A year ago Rose endured a brutal summer after a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. He beat all odds and enjoyed BYU’s first ride past the opening round of the NCAAs since 1993. Since then, the scans have come back clean. Although the names have yet to develop up front, Rose has proven his ability to develop talent. There’s never anything fancy, just hard work, attention to detail and a home court with the MWC’s biggest capacity (22,700). Again, BYU plays a schedule designed to generate a tourney-worthy RPI heading into the MWC slate. With an All-American running the show in Fredette, there’s little reason to believe the Cougars won’t make it five in a row in the postseason. BYU Finish in the Mountain West: 2nd
