2010-2011 California Season Preview

Mike Montgomery is embarking upon his 29th season as a college head coach. And it would take more research than he cares to do to recall the last time he has coached a team that lost as many key players from the previous season as this one. The top four scorers from the PaC-IO’s regular- season champion – all of whom, including Player of the Year Jerome Randle, earned some degree of all-conference honors – were seniors. And sophomore forward Omondi Amoke who had moved into the starting lineup, was dis~ssed from the program just prior to the team’s NCAA Tournament first-round game with Louisville. The best of Montgomery’s teams at Stanford seemingly never lost more than two or three key players from one season to the next. That’s why each of the five scholarship freshmen on his roster will be given ample opportunity to contribute as the Bears try to go 3-for-3 in NCAA Tournament bids under Montgomery. But there are some returnees that Montgomery is counting on to do more than just show the first-year players the ropes.

California Backcourt

Jorge Gutierrez is the most experienced of the returnees, starting 13 times as a soph~more, while averaging about 21 minutes per game. Already a dependable playmaker and onball defender, he won’t be asked to score as much as the guy whose spot he likely takes in the lineup (Randle), but he could be a bit more aggressive in that regard. Montgomery’s freshman class can be referred to as “guard-laden.” Allen Crabbe, Alex Rossi, Emerson Murray and Gary Franklin are exceptional jump shooters, with Crabbe also capable of swinging to a forward slot. They will be in any seven-or eight-player rotation Montgomery decides upon, with a couple of them likely to start.

California Frontcourt

Markhuri Sanders-Frison was a part-time starter, and 7-3 Max Zhang – who casts the largest shadow in the conference – averaged about 10 minutes per game. But Montgomery believes the key to the stability and success of his post play is contingent on keeping Kamp on the floor. Kamp, who sat out last season after knee surgery, has the combination of savvy and strength that was a trademark of the kind of post player Montgomery coached at Stanford.

2010-2011 California Predictions

With so many newcomers, logic dictates that this is a team that should be a bit better in the second half of conference play than it will be over the first nine Pac-10 games. Even so, cracking an upper-half finish could be a chore. California Finish in the PAC-10: 9th
