2009-2010 Charlotte Season Preview

Injuries were actually a more lethal opponent last season than any of the foes that Bobby Lutz’s squad faced.

Seven players were hobbled throughout as key losses of Shamarr Bowden in the preseason and Charles Dewhurst in early January shortened the bench. The chemistry was further wrecked with Phil Jones and An’Juan Wilderness also missing contests.

In addition to staying healthy, the 49ers need to do two things to finally climb into Atlantic 10 contention. First, they need a return to consistency in the 3-point game, a staple in Lutz’s up-tempo offense. Ian Andersen made a team-high 81 last season, as 38.5 percent of Charlotte’s total shot attempts were from 3-point range, but Charlotte hit only 30.6 percent from behind the arc.

Second, the 49ers need a consistent and efficient post game to emerge. Rebounding was a problem a year ago, but Lutz has signed talented reinforcements to solidify the inside game. Shamari Spears will add physicality in the paint as the Boston College transfer, and 6-8 freshman Chris Braswell, likely will be the top pair of frontcourt recruits in the A-10.

Freshman post K.J. Sherrill could join Braswell and Spears with immediate playing time, especially if Jones doesn’t improve on last season when he scored in double figures in only 11 games and tallied double figures in rebounding only once.

The debut of Bowden in the backcourt with electric point man DiJuan Harris should make Charlotte a much tougher matchup on the perimeter. Harris was fourth in the nation in assists last season and averaged 37 minutes, turning the ball over only 76 times.

Bowden, a redshirt freshman, is known as a tremendous jump shooter who will make life on the perimeter easier for Andersen and Wilderness, who has a world of talent which he needs to show on a regular basis.
