• Larry Davis, Junior, Guard, 6.8 points per game
• Lance Stephenson, Freshman, Forward, DNP last season

• Yancy Gates, Sophomore, Forward, 10.6 points per game

2009-2010 Cincinnati Season Preview

The Bearcats have steadily gotten better, under Mick Cronin and, entering his fourth season, they could make their biggest leap yet.

Unlike other Big East schools, which lost numerous players to the NBA or graduation, Cincinnati returns everybody of consequence.

Beyond that, the Bearcats scored a major recruiting coup in signing forward Lance Stephenson, considered one of the best high school players in the class of 2009, perhaps the best high school player in New York history and the Bearcats’ most high-profile freshman since DerMarr Johnson, a former McDonald’s All-American and the 1999 Parade National High School Player of the Year.

In addition to Stephenson, Cincinnati will have point guard Cashmere Wright back after he missed last season with a knee injury.

Cincinnati Backcourt

By the end of the season, guard Deonta Vaughn was mentally and physically worn out. Vaughn led the team with 15.3 points per game, grabbed 4.0 rebounds and averaged 35.8 minutes, far more than any other player.

Vaughn was named to the All-Big East third team a year after making the first team, but he couldn’t get a break because the team didn’t have any other options. Depth won’t be an issue this season.

Wright gives the Bearcats another quick ball­handler who can break defenders down off the dribble or dish to teammates.

Shooter Larry Davis is another reliable and experienced guard who has improved his jumper and defense.

Versatile guard Dion Dixon played major minutes as a freshman, and Cronin hopes he will improve his shooting and work on his ability to drive to the basket.

The Bearcats also added two freshmen guards – Sean Kilpatrick and Jaquon Parker – who Cronin feels are undervalued among recruiting pundits.

Kilpatrick chose the Bearcats over Providence and is known as a catch-and-shoot wing, while Parker is more physical and chose Cincinnati over UConn, Georgetown and Virginia.

Cincinnati Frontcourt

Yancy Gares was second on the ream in points as a freshman, scoring 10.6 points per game and leading the Bearcats with a 6.1 rebound average.

The team will miss 6-7 Mike Williams, a reliable scorer and rebounder, but returns solid reserve Steve Toyloy, who will be a senior, 7-footer Anthony McClain and Darnell Wilks.

Toyloy is a physical rebounder and defender, while McClain is raw offensively but a good shot blocker. Wilks is a tremendous athlete who needs to get stronger.

The team’s best defender is 6-6 Rashad Bishop, who uses his strength and quickness to smother opponents.

Just in time for the Crosstown Shootout between Cincinnati and rival Xavier, Oklahoma State transfer Ibrahima Thomas will be eligible to play, giving the team a physical post player.

And then there’s Stephenson, who seems to be a magnet for issues of all sorts. There’s his dad (difficult), his attitude (tempestuous) and his legal problems (plead out … no jail time coming). But then there are his skills, which would be a welcome addition to the Bearcats if they can be had without too much collateral damage.

That last part is the big key to Cincinnati’s season. There’s a reason coaches were running from him as if he was on fire.

2009-2010 Cincinnati Predictions

Stephenson’s arrival paired with a good group of returning players and newcomers means the Bearcats have a legitimate chance to make a run at the Big East and get back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2005.
