2010-2011 Cincinnati Season Preview

Nothing was secure a year ago for the Bearcats, who seemed to fall apart just in time to lose late in games. The Bearcats kept losing games in the final minutes – six to be exact – and lost seven games by five points or less. They failed to make free throws, get stops or take good shots down the stretch. Cincinnati’s offense mainly revolved around Lance Stephenson, who was named the Big East Freshman of the Year and selected in the second round of the NBA Draft. Though talented, Stephenson’s need to dominate the ball was problematic.

Cincinnati Backcourt

Deonta Vaughn, a two-time All-Big East selection, finished his career last season as the school’s all-time assist leader (511) and third in points (1,885). He and Stephenson led the team in scoring, leaving ample opportunity for other guards to now step up. Cashmere Wright, who started 11 games last season, will take over at point guard. He was third on the team in assists behind Vaughn and Stephenson and third among guards in free-throw attempts. Cronin is confident Wright and sophomore Jaquon Parker will make a good tandem. Parker is a strong combo guard who was a pleasant surprise as a freshman. Cincinnati also returns several veteran guards. After showing considerable promise as a scorer as a sophomore, Larry Davis hit a slump. If he is capable of regaining his form and confidence, he will be a huge help. Dion Dixon is the team’s top sixth man and one of the Bearcats’ best free-throw shooters. Cronin is excited about 6-4 redshirt freshman Sean Kilpatrick, a scorer who moves well without the ball.

Cincinnati Frontcourt

The Bearcats return starting big men in 6-9 Yancy Gates and 6-11 Ibrahima Thomas. The duo led the team in rebounding last year and now will be charged with leading the team. Athletic 6-7 forward Darnell Wilks is an efficient scorer and defender off the bench. Defensive terror Rashad Bishop had his best season last year but was suspended the last five games for violating unspecified rules. To help up front, the Bearcats added post players in 6-10 Kelvin Gaines and 6-8 Justin Jackson. Jackson is a potential All-Big East rookie team candidate, according to Cronin, because of his tenacity.

2010-2011 Cincinnati Predictions

Producing points could be a struggle for the Bearcats, but Cronin likes the fact that the offense will be more balanced. If Gates and Thomas dominate, the Bearcats could win a few more Big East games than they did last year.

The trick will be keeping everybody healthy and eligible. Cincinnati Finish in the Big East: 14th
