2010-2011 Colorado State Season Preview

Progress seems painfully slow for Colorado State, yet being last season’s NO.5 seed in the Mountain West Tournament and receiving postseason recognition in the College Basketball Invitational represented significant improvement. IIEvery coach wants to win tomorrow,” coach Tim Miles said. But he has adhered to patience and building the team the right way, through the high school ranks. Often that means a redshirt year. The next step for the Rams is a breakthrough victory against one of the MWC’s elite four BYU, San Diego State, New Mexico and UNLV. After failing to win a MWC game in his first season, Miles has clearly distanced the program from the league cellar. Next is closing games – the Rams had their chances at UCLA, at home against New Mexico and in the MWC Tournament opener against San Diego State. The biggest change this year will be some depth at the point. When 2009 standout freshman Jesse Carr was unable to go because of a lingering pelvic injury, true freshman Dorian Green was forced to step in as a starter in all 32 games, averaging a team-high 35 minutes. With Carr back to full health, Iowa State transfer Wes Eikmeier eligible and incoming freshman Maurice Wiltz expected to compete, Green won’t wear down quite so quickly. liThe kids have to buy into substitutions,” Miles said. “They understand Dorian is not going to play 36 minutes a game.” Shooting guard remains in the hands of senior Adam Nigon, one of the best walk-on stories in the country, coming up from intramurals. There isn’t a scrappier player in the league than the 32-game starter who battles for every loose balL The Rams’ one league headliner is forward Andy Ogide, a Mississippi transfer who took second-team All-MWC honors last season. Like most MWC teams, CSU uses a signature wing position, misleadingly listed as forward. It will again be variously manned by sophomores Pierce Hornung and Greg Smith, and seniors Travis Franklin and Andre McFarland. The biggest difference-maker is some long-awaited size in 6-10 freshman Chad Calcaterra, who earned rave reviews in the summer from veteran teammates.
