2009-2010 Creighton Season Preview

Nothing inspires offseason motivation quite like an NCAA Tournament snub.

Despite racking up 26 wins prior to Selection Sunday, Creighton found itself on the outside looking in when invitations were handed out in March. The Bluejays were counted among the last four teams out, forcing them to settle for another National Invitation Tournament appearance.

Creighton went 1-1 in the NIT, seeing its season end on a three-point play by Kentucky All-American Jodie Meeks in the final seconds. Then, after a short break, the Bluejays went to work to get ready for this season.

In an attempt to avoid last season’s disappointments, Stinnett and his teammates have cranked things up in their weight-room work. The Bluejays are convinced stronger is better, especially when it comes to avoiding the rebounding problems (minus-3.4 overall) that plagued them last season.

Creighton Backcourt

Despite losing starters Booker Woodfox and Josh Dotzler, Creighton’s strength again rests with its guards.

Stinnett has teased Bluejay fans with glimpses of greatness in his first two seasons, but his overall play has been up and down. Some of the latter has been a result of a lack of maturity. He’s been whistled for seven technical fouls in two seasons and missed last season’s game against Nebraska after a locker-room blowup.

When focused, Stinnett can be as good as there is in the Valley. He knows it, and he’s intent on changing his ways.

Stinnett will need to be more consistent on offense to offset the loss of Woodfox, the team’s leading scorer and the MVC Player of the Year. Antoine Young is the leading candidate to take over from Dotzler at the point.

Young is a more capable offensive player, but still lacks Dotzler’s command of the offense. True freshman Andrew Bock could challenge Young, while Cavel Witter returned in June after leaving the program in April.

He’s a combo guard who can be explosive on offense but needs to improve his defense to get the playing time he covets. Kaleb Korver, a 44.8-percent shooter from long range, and redshirt Josh Jones supply depth.

Justin Carter could be a backcourt wild card. A wing player before coming to Creighton, the 6-4 Carter played power forward out of necessity last season. Depending on how several newcomers develop, Carter could find himself operating more on the perimeter.

Creighton Frontcourt

Already thin up front, the Bluejays took a hit when 6-9 Kenton Walker decided to transfer. Walker averaged 5.1 points, 3.9 rebounds and 1.3 blocked shots a game as a backup, and his departure leaves 6-8 Chad Millard destined to spell starter Kenny Lawson in the middle.

The Bluejays need a breakout season from the 6-9 Lawson, who led the league in blocked shots last season while finishing third on the team in scoring (8.5 average).

Creighton will look to newcomers Wayne Runnels and Ethan Wragge to help out on the boards. Runnels is a 6-6 junior college transfer who set Northeast Oklahoma’s career rebounding record. A 6-6 freshman, Wragge has inside outside skills that fit well in the Bluejays’ offense.

2009-2010 Creighton Predictions

Creighton’s chances of making the NCAA Tournament a year ago were hurt by a schedule that didn’t measure up. That wasn’t all the Bluejays’ fault as several non-conference opponents had uncharacteristically bad seasons.

This season, Creighton will play in the Old Spice Classic, which will include Marquette, Michigan, Florida State, Alabama and Baylor. The Bluejays also have trips to Dayton, New Mexico and George Mason to add challenge to the schedule.

The non-league competition should prepare Creighton to make another run at the NCAA Tournament. Creighton Finish in the Missouri Valley: 2nd
