2010-2011 DePaul Season Preview

Incase you’re wondering, Oliver Purnell is well aware he traded in a Clemson program that qualified for the past three NCAA Tournaments for a dormant program that won just two Big East games the past two seasons. And, no, the 57-year-old renowned for his rebuilding prowess isn’t crazy. It’s going to take at least three years to rebuild the Blue Demons into a credible Big East team. Purnell now will try to weld eight scholarship holdovers with three promising freshmen and hopes to get the team out of the basement.

DePaul Backcourt

Juniors Jeremiah Kelly and Michael Bizoukas have shared the point for most of the past two seasons, which has resulted in a 2-37 record against Big East foes. While each guy has his plusses, prized freshman Brandon Young has a legitimate chance to have the ball in his hands for the opener. He has the size, smarts and skills to compete with other Big East generals. Senior swingman Mike Stovall, who hit the game-winning shots that shocked Marquette for DePaul’s only league win last year, is the team’s top returning scorer and has the opencourt game that meshes with Purnell’s uptempo preference. Freshman Moses Morgan came to Chicago early and lit up the Sonny Parker Pro-Am League, which is a good sign he’s ready to play right away.

DePaul Frontcourt

Shortly after Purnell took over the program – though unrelated to the change – center Mac Koshwal took his double-double average and turned pro a year early. His departure leaves a gaping hole that will be impossible to fill. Junior Krys Faber, who started 10 Big East games last season, provides a big, strong body to defend the basket, but he needs to improve his post moves. Slender junior Devin Hill has the versatility to be the “4″ man in Purnell’s schemes, as he can score in the post and step out to the 3-point arc, but he needs to improve his 38.5 percent success rate from the floor. Junior Eric Wallace, sophomore Tony Freeland and freshman Cleveland Melvin have the athleticism Purnell craves, and they’ll have lots of opportunity to put their skills to work in the open court – but none of them have a consistent outside stroke.

2010-2011 DePaul Predictions

Purnell understands he’ll probably miss out on March Madness for the first time in four years, but he plans to lay the groundwork for turning DePaul into Clemson Midwest. In other words, look for the Demons to trade in last year’s patient half-court style for intense defense all over the court. That depends, of course, on how quickly they learn.

DePaul Finish in the Big East: 16th
