2009-2010 Drake Season Preview

Excuse Mark Phelps for thinking about what might have been after his first season as Drake’s head coach.

The Bulldogs won 17 games and made it to postseason play for the second straight season. That’s a feat that hadn’t been accomplished in Des Moines since the Bulldogs played in the NCAA Tournament from 1969 through 1971.

Drake was the only Valley team to defeat co-champions Creighton and Northern Iowa on the road and posted high-profile wins over Iowa and Iowa State.

It could have been better had Drake not lost four games in the final seconds, including the season finale to Idaho in the CollegeInsider.com Tournament. Evansville beat the Bulldogs on a half-court shot at the buzzer, while the Bulldogs lost to Southern Illinois 56-55 after missing two free throws with two-tenths of a second to play. Bradley also posted a 77-75 double-overtime win over Drake.

The four close losses were among the 11 the Bulldogs sustained in conference play as they went from league champions to a tie for eighth in the standings. Drake also became the first team since 2002 to lose in the play-in round of the league tournament as the defending champion.

Josh Young headlines the returning players. The senior guard led the league in scoring as a sophomore and finished third last season. The Bulldogs will need to find ways to keep opposing defenses from ganging up on Young, whose perimeter skills are among the best in the league.

Also back are starters Adam Templeton and Craig Stanley, and a recruiting class that ranked tops in the league has created some buzz among Drake fans.

More immediate help could come from four redshirts, including guard Ryan Wedel. He was a two-year starter at Arkansas State.
