2010-2011 Drake Season Preview

Mark Phelps faced a difficult assignment when he took over the Drake basketball program three years ago. The Bulldogs were coming off a magical season in which they won the Missouri Valley regular- season and tournament championships and played in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 37 years. Phelps’ first two seasons in Des Moines have been filled with ups and downs. He heads into year three knowing it’s time to start showing progress – all the players on the roster are his recruits. Three starters return, and the recruiting class was ranked No.1 in the Missouri Valley for the second straight year. The Bulldogs must replace all-time leading scorer and four-year starter Josh Young, the team’s leader on and off the court. Also gone is forward Adam Templeton, who put together a solid senior season, and slick point guard Craig Stanley, who missed half of last season with an injury. Drake should benefit from the experience young players gained last season. The Bulldogs had 11 first-year players on the roster, which contributed to some of the inconsistency that plagued Drake and led to eight losses by four points or fewer. The biggest bright spot last season was the emergence of freshman center Seth VanDeest, who earned a spot of the All-Freshman Team and finished second in the Valley in blocked shots. He needs to get stronger, but he showed potential to be a legitimate threat inside. Guard Ryan Wedel earned a spot on the league’s All-Newcomer team, showcasing outstanding shooting range with great anticipation – he finished second in the Valley in steals (1.5 per game). Frank Wiseler showed well in taking over for the injured Stanley. If the Bulldogs are going to make a move in the standings, they’ll need help from their highly regarded recruits. Guard Rayvonte Rice was the Illinois’ Gatorade High School Player of the Year. Kurt Alexander earned junior college All-America honors and should challenge for playing time at the point. Kraidon Woods should bolster the inside attack after transferring from Arizona State.
