2010-2011 Duke Season Preview

On paper Duke is better than it was last season, when the Blue Devils won the national title. That doesn’t mean Duke will repeat because games are played on the court. But on paper, Duke is better. Jon Scheyer and his 2,000 career points are gone, but transfer Seth Curry is eligible. And he averaged 20 points per game two years ago as a freshman at Liberty. Brian Zoubek is gone, but the Plumlee brothers and Ryan Kelly give Duke nearly 21 feet of springy, athletic big man. Kyle Singler and Nolan Smith are back after combining for 35 points per game last season, and a loaded freshman class led by the sensational Kyrie Irving joins Curry in the newcomer bin.

Duke Backcourt

Last season Duke had just three scholarship guards on the roster. This season, the Blue Devils have five, including what probably will be the best newcomer tandem in the country In Curry and Irving. How good is Irving? Put
it this way: Coach K compared him to former Wake Forest All-American Chris Paul. So are Curry and Nolan Smith, known commodities both. Andre Dawkins, who should have been a high school senior last season but graduated early to help Duke, shot 37.9 percent on 3-pointers and should be even better. And freshman Tyler Thornton gives Coach K enough depth to play fast.

Duke Frontcourt

Duke lost two starters down low, but Krzyzewski isn’t worried about feeling the sting thanks to the return of Mason and Miles Plumlee and also Ryan Kelly, who was lost in the shuffle last season but was highly regarded out of high school- he wasn’t just a McDonald’s All-American; he won that allstar game’s 3-point contest – and has added 15 pounds of muscle. Oh, and there’s small forward Kyle Singler, who is on pace to become just the fourth ACC player to finish his career with more than 2,400 career points and 1,000 rebounds.

2010-2011 Duke Predictions

Duke should win about as often as it did last season, but the method will be different. Gone is the enormous halfcourt team that mashed opponents on the glass and scored 77 points per game. In its place is a smaller, quicker, more skilled group that will be pushed by Irving. The bottom line is Krzyzewski, with 868 career wins, will blow past Dean Smith’s ACC mark of 879 – and not stop until he’s right around 900.

Duke Finish in the ACC: 1st
