2009-2010 Duquesne Season Preview

Might this finally be the year Duquesne returns to the NCAA Tournament? It’s a place the Dukes haven’t been since 1977.

Coach Ron Everhart has created a legitimate postseason contender and has done it the old fashioned way – by recruiting studs. It isn’t as easy as it sounds considering all the options available to players in the region.

Last season, Duquesne was the surprise of the Atlantic 10, advancing to within six points of an NCAA bid before losing to Temple in the A-10 championship game. This from a team that was the youngest in Division 1, its 21 victories were the most at the school since 1971. The NIT bid, where outgoing guard Aaron Jackson scored a career-high 46 points in a first-round, double-overtime loss at Virginia Tech, was Duquesne’s first postseason berth since playing in the 1994 NIT.

With Jackson gone, Duquesne returns eight of its top nine scorers. Junior forwards Damian Saunders and Bill Clark combined to average 26 points and 12.6 rebounds per game, while sophomore guard/forward Melquan Bolding came on strong in the second half of his first college season. Saunders enters the year with more career assists (125), steals (116) and blocks (122) than turnovers (100).

Former walk-on guard Jason Dury – the team’s lone senior – earned a scholarship after finishing fourth in the A-10 in 3-point shooting percentage (41.4).

Jackson’s point guard spot is expected to go to Eric Evans, a four-time A-10 Rookie of the Week as a freshman. Sophomore guard/forward B.J. Monteiro (3.3 ppg), a former Connecticut high school Player of the Year, also is expected to provide depth at both positions.

Everhart also will count on contributions from incoming freshmen Andre Marhold and Sean Johnson, as well as redshirt freshman Rodrigo Peggau and a pair of sophomore centers in Kentucky transfer Morakinyo ‘Mike’ Williams and Oliver Lewinson.
