2010-2011 Duquesne Season Preview

After falling short of some lofty expectations last season, Duquesne has tempered its approach to 2010-11. Coach Ron Everhart welcomes back another veteran team, led by senior forward Damian Saunders, a stat-stuffer on offense and a lockdown defender. But there is no guarantee that the Dukes, who won 21 games two years ago but settled for a .500 record last season, can take another step forward. Saunders, who averaged a double-double with 15 points and 11.3 rebounds per game, and fellow senior Bill Clark, who averaged 14.1 points per game, return to lead a team that was expected to contend in the Atlantic 10 after losing only one player – all-league guard Aaron Jackson – from the previous year. But Jackson’s absence left the remaining players searching for a leader. Duquesne spiraled out of control down the stretch, losing four of its final five games, including a first-round setback to Princeton in the College Basketball Invitational. While Saunders and Clark are expected to lead the way, starting guard Melquan Bolding, who missed 13 games with a broken wrist and struggled with his shot all season, transferred to Fairleigh Dickinson Duquesne welcomes an intriguing new class, though, led by 3-point specialist T.J. McConnell, who averaged 34.2 points and 9.1 assists per game as a high school senior, and lightning-quick guard Mike Talley, who averaged 31.1 and 8.1, respectively. Both point guards are expected to push incumbent junior Eric Evans. Other returning veterans include junior swingman B.J. Monteiro, a former Connecticut high school Player of the Year, oft-injured redshirt sophomore forward Rodrigo Peggau, sophomore guard Sean Johnson, sophomore forward Andre Marhold and senior forward David Theis. The Dukes also could benefit from two other incoming freshmen, 6-5 swingman Jerry Jones, who averaged 18.1 points per game as a high school senior, and 6-9 forward Derrick Martin, who averaged 14 points, 15 rebounds and seven blocks. If Martin is able to make an immediate contribution, it might allow the 6-7, 210-pound Saunders to move to a’ more natural position of small forward, where he could develop into a bona fide NBA prospect.
