2010-2011 East Carolina Season Preview

Acoaching change is generally followed by major roster overhaul, but at East Carolina, Jeff Lebo took over a program with everybody returning. More than likely, Lebo, the former Auburn coach and North Carolina guard, won’t win big with Mack McCarthy’s players, but experience has to count for something. Still there’s a culture of losing that’s rampant at the school that has not put together a winning season since finishing 17-10 in 1996-97 and wasn’t exactly a basketball power when it was moved into Conference USA in what was most certainly a football-driven move. The fact that McCarthy resigned after just three years tells you the level of frustration at East Carolina, which has never been able to gain traction in C-USA. But Lebo has a good foundation starting with point guard Brock Young, who led the league in assists and became the 19th player in Conference USA history with 400 career assists. He’s the fourth player in school history to record back-to-back 100-assist seasons. Everything revolved around Young and if he shot well, the Pirates won, but when he didn’t, they struggled offensively. Also back is sophomore forward Darrius Morrow, who led C-USA in field-goal percentage – the fourth player in school history to do so. Along with Young, senior J ontae Sherrod provides savvy in the backcourt, while center Chad Wynn needs to get stronger and add some bulk to his 6-10 body. One of the most improved players in the latter half of the season was senior Jamar Abrams, who enjoyed some special moments in the clutch and will be asked to do more this season. Despite all the starters returning, a 10-win team means jobs aren’t necessarily secure, and Lebo signed a sleeper in Robert Sampson, the son of former Virginia All-American Ralph Sampson. His face-up game is ever-improving and Sampson has the size and athletic skills to play power forward and some center. Lebo also brought in 6-5 swingman Tony Smith from Seward County Community College who has the versatility to play both wing spots and point guard.

Re ECU personnel. Tony Smith did not qualify so he is not on the team. Other than that pretty much spot on.
