2010-2011 Florida Season Preview

Kenny Boynton has heard all the preseason hype. Though the Gators return their entire starting five and lose only one key player, Boynton is wise enough not to buy in just yet. Florida went 21-13 and made it to the NCAA Tournament last season, but the Gators finished fourth in the Southeastern Conference East Division and lost five of their last six games. If the Gators maintain their focus, there is no reason why they can’t return to the upper echelon of the Southeastern Conference and get past the first round of the Big Dance.

Florida Backcourt

Boynton and feisty 5-8 Erving Walker were the Gators’ top two scorers last season. Walker spent more time as the team’s main distributor and is the SEC’s top returning assist guy after averaging 4.9 per game. Boynton averaged 14 points and was named to the All-SEC Freshman team last season, no small feat considering the other terrific newcomers in the league. Both players averaged 32.9 minutes per game and may have had a difficult time sustaining a high level of play based on wear and tear. But the Gators added freshman Scottie Wilbekin, a scoring point guard who should boost depth considerably. Freshman swingman Casey Prather is an athletic 6-5 wing with a knack for rebounding and slashing to the basket.

Florida Frontcourt

Macklin made big improvements from the beginning of the season to the end last year and shot a team-best 60.7 percent from the field. He and 6-8 Alex Tyus give the Gators the most experienced frontline in the SEC. Tyus tied with multi-skilled forward Chandler Parsons for the team lead with 6.9 rebounds per game. Tyus considered turning pro, but decided to return for his senior year. Parsons has developed into an all-around glue guy who is a good passer, scorer and rebounder. He shot the highest percentage from 3-point range of those who attempted at least 15 treys. The crown jewel of Florida’s recruiting class is 6-8 power forward Patrie Young, a shotblocking/ rebound machine. The Gators also added athletic forwards Will Yeguete and Cody Larson, giving them even more options up front.

2010-2011 Florida Predictions

With nearly everybody back from last season and some talented freshmen, the Gators will be a legitimate SEC contender. As long as they block out the hype and focus on getting better, they should avoid another early exit in the NCAA Tournament.

Florida Finish in the SEC: 1st in East Division
