2009-2010 Florida State Season Preview

A 25-win season, a spot in the ACC championship game and the school’s first NCAA Tournament appearance in 11 years in 2009 elevated Florida State’s standing from mid-pack grinder to league contender.

And there’s no reason to suggest the Seminoles will backslide under the direction of eighth-year coach Leonard Hamilton. With seven of the top nine players returning, joined by another outstanding recruiting class, the ‘Noles figure to be even better.

There’s a lot to like, beginning with experience and length; something the ‘Noles have in abundance. Solomon Alabi, a 7-1 sophomore who is poised to become one of the elite posts in the U.S., leads the way. A pair of McDonald’s All-Americans – 6-9 sophomore Chris Singleton and 6-5 freshman Michael Snaer – give FSU one of its most talented teams.

Florida State Backcourt

Junior Derwin Kitchen shared the ball handling duties last season with ACC scoring leader and first-round draft pick Toney Douglas, but figures to assume a more prominent role.

Kitchen and sophomore point guard Luke Loucks used the summer months to improve their perimeter shooting; already a strength for sophomore Deividas Dulkys. Throw
Snaer into the mix and you have four guards 6-4 or taller who collectively should easily help absorb Douglas’ 21 points per game.

FSU’s length in the backcourt should also be an asset as the ‘Noles try to maintain their standing as the ACC’s top scoring defense. Selfless and energetic swingman Jordan DeMercy will help set the tone in the absence of Douglas, who was the league’s Defensive Player of the Year. So might diminutive redshirt freshman point guard Pierre Jordan, who is physically capable of hastening the pace of play with on-the-ball pressure.

Florida State Frontcourt

A guard-oriented team each of the past two seasons, the Seminoles appear to be transitioning toward an inside-out attack, thanks largely to the presence of Alabi, senior Ryan Reid and sophomores Xavier Gibson and Singleton.

Alabi is more than a shot-blocking presence at the back end of the Seminoles’ defense. By adding strength, the Nigerian’s rebounding will improve. With shooting range Out to 17 feet, he should become more of an offensive force. So should Singleton, who has improved his handle, after distinguishing himself as a solid defender last season.

2009-2010 Florida State Predictions

Hamilton isn’t one to show his hand, but it’s pretty clear in a season with the perennial ACC powers reloading, the ‘Noles stand a good chance of improving on last season’s third-place regular season finish.

FSU must find an on-the-ball defender to fill Douglas’ shoes, but depth, improved shooting and continued selflessness should be harbingers for continued success. Florida State Finish in the ACC: 6th
