2010-2011 Florida State Season Preview

Florida State isn’t going away, so if you’re waiting for that to happen … stop. Leonard Hamilton has the Seminoles rolling through the ACC, their 20 league wins over the past two years are second only to Duke. FSU lost Solomon Alabi to the NBA ahead of schedule, but every guard in the rotation returns, as does deluxe combo forward Chris Singleton. Throw in a solid recruiting class that has two JC post players ready to contribute immediately, and the Seminoles won’t miss Alabi. One year after their first-round loss in the NCAA Tournament, the Seminoles are thinking about taking the next step.

Florida State Backcourt

The Seminoles have three guards capable of scoring in double figures, all of them with good size. Deividas Dulkys is the best shooter of the bunch, maybe the best shooter in the ACC, while Derwin Kitchen fills the stat sheet every possible way. That’s two of them. The third guard? His name is Michael Snaer, and he has the highest upside of the group. Seeing how this is his sophomore season – the year when college players typically make their biggest improvement – don’t be surprised if he doubles his freshman scoring average. Newcomer Ian Miller is a combo guard who should give Hamilton a quality replacement for Kitchen at the point while also pushing Loucks for minutes on the wing.

Florida State Frontcourt

The Seminoles lost their starting center to the NBA yet have oodles of frontcourt depth. The quality of that depth remains to be seen, with three potential contributors making their ACC debut this season. Singleton is the linchpin, a multi-faceted defensive whiz along the lines of Josh Smith – an NBA player who impacts games with blocks and steals. He combined for nearly four of those per game, which helped mask the fact that his shooting percentages were abysmal across the board: 41.2 on field goals, 29.6 on 3-pointers, 49.6 on free throws. Xavier Gibson was roughly half as productive as Alabi in half the minutes – do the math – but he’s not even the most interesting big man of the bunch. That would be Bernard James, the 25-year-old former U.S. Air Force member who was MVP of an international military tournament in 2008. Or it would be Jon Kreft, slated to make his FSU debut four years after signing with the Seminoles; his career, and life, were derailed by a drug possession conviction that saw him spend six months in prison.

2010-2011 Florida State Predictions

Florida State has the personnel to pull off a repeat of last season, when the Seminoles entered the NCAA Tournament leading the country in defensive field-goal percentage and rode that defensive stinginess to an unexpectedly stout season. But if the Seminoles could muster the offense to match … look out. They were among the worst shooters nationally from 3-point range (33.5 percent) and the foul line (64-4 percent) last season. Improve those numbers a tick, and FSU will be formidable.

FSU must find an on-the-ball defender to fill Douglas’ shoes, but depth, improved shooting and continued selflessness should be harbingers for continued success. Florida State Finish in the ACC: 4th
